4x3 TVs still available?

My dad's in the market for a new tv. Something in the range of 32". But he doesn't have HD signal, and likely won't get it any time soon. He's got direct tv and doesn't want to get a new dish, receiver, and dvr. If he gets a 16x9 tv, he'll either be buying screen he doesn't need (the edges) or be forced to watch a stretched picture.

Can people still buy 4x3 tvs? Any suggestions?

MrGreg -
I looked like Hell before I bought my last tv for the bedroom. I really wanted a 4:3 as I simply prefer 'em. I ended up buying a smaller tv just so I could get the 4:3 ratio. I couldn't find a single one in the 32" range. I found a couple in the 27" range and you know what? They look bigger than the stupid 32" 16:9 ratio tvs. Tis true. Tis true. So best of look with your hunting. I ended up with a cheapo Polaroid brand but she's been nothing but stable and looks great. (now that I said that watch what happens!)

That's because they are.
A 32" 16x9 ratio tv will have a surface area of 437.55 square inches
A 32" 4x3 ratio tv will have a surface area of 491.52 square inches

(although for myself, I chose a 52" 16x9)

I've been trying, but there are a ton of 16x9 tvs to go through. And people aren't exactly advertising the fact that a tv is 4x3, so I can't really search for them specifically.

In that case, all I can say is "good luck" -- I'm sure LCD panels only started coming out in widescreen (they came after plasma sets, which were all widescreen as well).

Unless you are trying to buy a computer monitor or a very small TV... I'd highly doubt that you'd find anthing larger than 30" being in 4:3 aspect on an LCD.

if you want an lcd, you're going to have to get yourself a 16x9.

There was a small window... and stupidly, I bought a (i think 24") 4x3 lcd for my parents for like 600+ (about 5 years ago?). I can't imagine what a 32" 4x3 lcd would've cost during that window.

anyways, get a 32", or even a 37" lcd (i've seen 37" go for around 550 when there's a good deal). use that screen, with the borders if he really doesn't want it stretched (i watch mine stretched), and he can enjoy that extra space whenever he watches a dvd.

I'm fairly certain there was a window of time where they made both lcd and plasmas in 4x3 format. Their current tv is a 21" 4x3 lcd.
