Dish Network Deal

I discontinued my Dish service in March because I watch little TV and they raised the rates every year.

So I get this call a few weeks ago from Dish and the guy offers me a sweet deal for two years. It's half the price I was paying.

I was ready to accept it and BAM..the guy asks for my SS number. I told him I don't give my SS number over the phone.

Sound like a scam?

It's hard to say. I've had people from Discover card call to offer me a modified card, and when the got to where they asked for my ssn, I told them they weren't getting it. When I called back to Discover to ask about it, they said it was their caller and I told them they were making a big mistake requesting that information when they place a call.

I'd just ask for his extension at Dish and call back their main line. If it's a real deal he should be reachable through their primary phone number, if not...

with all the different call centers, this is not always possible.

couldn't you ask for a website or a letter to mail back?

Yesterday, I went to one of the Dish Network sites. Even that site requires a SS number.

They need your social security number to run a credit check to make sure you can pay the monthly bill, especially if you are going to be locked into an annual contract. All utility, cable, phone, wireless services require your social security number for this very reason.

Whether you sign up on the phone or over the internet, they're going to ask for it. I am sure that if you ask for the paperwork to fill out and mail back to them they would be able to accommodate you.

I'm surprised that businesses don't realize that someone receiving a phone call from a company might be reluctant to just give out their ssn. These days you should never give your ssn to anyone that places a call to you.
