Hey fellas, I've been half looking for a new TV for a bit now, and I think I want one of these two 36" sets. What do you folks think? I am leaning towards the panny right now because of the auto progressive scan line doubler. That would save me having to buy a new DVD player.

Anyways, any thoughts are welcomed.

The Tau's and Wega's are generally rated quite simiar with the Tau having slightly better convergence at the corners (a problem with most of even the XBR WEGA's).

Thanks for the reply Apex. Do you know much about the progressive doubler thingy on the panny? Is it really what I think it is, as in doing the same thing as a progressive DVD player?

I have a Wega...

And I have been moderatly happy with it so far. But the convergence at the corners is a pain in the A$$ for all T.V's with that big of a screen. The A board broke on my WEGA when I moved and they came out and replaced it, I haven't been able to get the bottom right corner to appear in line. He said this is the problem with all of the bigger tube T.V.'s out there.

Why do people spend so much on Wegas? I don't know much about them, but isn't it time people start investing in widescreens HDs? How much would a 36" Wega cost anyway? What kind of HD widescreen could you get for the same anount of money?

Progressive doublers aren't exactly what progressive DVD's do. They do greatly improve the video quality, but not to the level a true progressive DVD does.

Widescreen HD's cost about 2X what the WEGA XBR400 do at the same size (the XBR400 is roughly $2k).

I was looking into a TV like this for a bit (not too-too seriously though because of the cost). Eventually bought an LCD projector.

Actually, with a little looking around you can get the Toshiba 40H80 for about 2K.....40 inch widescreen high definition ready......beautiful for the price. Looks amazing with progressive DVDs.

However, widescreen isn't for everyone.

Just my $.02

P.S.

The thing about tv line doublers is that they are basically guessing what those extra lines should be. That is why progressive players look better no matter how good a line doubler you have.....they don't have to guess.

Plus, a line doubler takes an analog signal, converts it to digital, does it's work, converts back to analog, and displays the image. Progressive players don't have to do all this converting, so there is less room for errors to occur.

Anyway, hope I didn't ramble too long, and got my facts right......hope it helps you decide.

They call it a scan line doubler I think. The Tau's have the progressive doubler.

Wow, just re-read that. Man, awesome price for that TV! Lowest for everywhere, especially taking into consideration shipping.

Let me know if you do decide on a TV from Amazon and want GC's for 80% of face.
