See if you can get the XBR450s instead. They have some new filter thingie to reduce artifacts. 3:2 pulldown or something. Will research when I get some sleep... zzzz....

Welcome to a new addiction

You will want to do some serious research before buying speakers and a receiver.....as if you didn't know this.....try and listen to what you are going to buy before you make the plunge.....

My first theater system was a box set, and I hated the way it sounded.....took it back, did some research, and bought another box set that was much better.

Good luck

The XBR450s replace the XBR400s, so the MSRP should be the same... Unless they are clearing out the 400s.

Boxed Set: *IF* you can still find them, then get the Energy Take 5's. What is your price range?

*IF* you can still find them, the Take 5's are only $249.00 for a set of 5 speakers. The Energy Sub should run you another $199 or so...

ufcrusher probably has the more updated pricing list. I know that the old Take 5's were eing phased out. It would be difficult to find them now.

I will second the recommendation for the Take 5's....I gave them a listen about a year ago, and they are excellent for the price. With only $600 to spend, that doesn't leave much room for the receiver......maybe you can just get the tv, spend some time looking for a deal on the Take 5's, and save another month or two until you have a bit more to spend on the receiver.....I really don't know what to recommend in the receiver area, as I havn't shopped for one in over a year....I have heard many good things about the Denon ARV 1801 (think that is it). However, I don't know if it is in your price range or if it is even still in production. Check it out, it may be a good starting place to begin looking.

Let us know what you find out/decide.

Bose sucks..........for the price.

For the same amount of money or less, you can get much better sounding equipment. And before anybody flames me for saying that, yes I have listened to Bose, and yes I have compared thier crap to other equally and lesser and higher priced components.

One thing you don't want to do is buy something that you are going to want to upgrade six months from now.....trust me, it is better to take your time and get what you want the first time. I went through 3 subwoofers, 3 sets of speakers, and 3 receivers before I got to where I am now. I do wish I had done some more research and listening before I took that initial plunge.

In my personal opinion, the Take 5's sound better than Bose, and are much cheaper. If you shop around a bit, I am sure you can find them for $500 or less.......provided that they still make them......However, $600 is not a bad price.....remember that you are getting FIVE speakers AND a powered sub......I spent more than that on my subwoofer alone.

I have also heard good things about the Klipsch box set, but I have never listened to them.

Start reading up on what you are thinking of buying at audioreview.com. Try and get into a home theater shop just to see what is available. I bought all my speakers (except the subwoofer) on ebay, and got pretty good deals on them. If you are interested, I have Infinity RS-3's for the fronts, RS-2's for the rears, and a CC-3 center channel. My subwoofer is the HPS1000, but that bastard is more than you want to spend, and probably alot more sub than you need. The Infinity setup I just mentioned could PROBABLY be had for close to $600 on ebay, but that is minus the sub.

Are you going to be using this setup for music as well as home theater? If so, then you may not want to get any box sets, because they generally are not very good for music.

I have been looking around a bit, and I belive that Energy replaced the Take 5 with the Take 5.2, but it is not listed on audioreview.com yet.

Here is the link for them from the Energy website:
http://www.energy-speakers.com/take5...rs_system.html

Anyway, hope all this helps a bit......keep posting on what you decide.

I got my Energy Take5 set at Good Guys a couple months ago. They had 'em temporarily downpriced at $250 or something (as Leon mentioned). I don't know why they were so cheap, but I was on em like a fly on ****. The funny thing is I haven't been able to use them once. That's because I've been doing research on receivers this whole time. It sucks to have such a beautiful thing just sitting in its box in the corner, but hopefully the waiting will pay off when I find a great receiver.

From what I've seen so far, Yamaha makes great audio products and receivers are no exception. Their receivers have slightly lower power than others in the same price range, but will give much clearer and more solid sound. That's prefect for me cause I have a small room and don't need much power. I just want great sound. I've finally decided on a model and am saving up to buy it soon. Some of their lower end models go as low as $200. check em out.

now I just need to find a good sub....ahhh. the endless HT journey....

thnx. i've decided on getting the energy take 5's. and for the reciever im gonna get the integra dtr 5.2. someone on another forum recommended them. looking at my budget i've reconsidered the choice for my wega. i've now decided on getting the jvc av-27f802. i think its a good model. not as good as the xrbs but good enought and for 700 its worth it. can someone please give me some input on my selection. my room is pretty small so im looking for quality sound instead of sheer power. i may need a dvd player also, so can someone also give me a hand on that too. thnx in advance.
