DVRs and Directv

Well hopefully one of you has directv or some type of satelite and tivo or other dvr thingy. Anyhow, I was wondering how it works together. Cause I can't figure out if you can somehow have the tivo change the channels instead of the receiver. I'm wanting to make a computer into a tivo, but wouldn't be that effective for having it record different programs while I'm gone since I can't figure out how I would have the computer change the channels since it won't be using the tv tuner really, it would rely on the signal from the satelite receiver. Anyhow somebody prove my theory wrong so I can get started on my DVR box .

what kind of tuner would you be using on your pvr box? i use my main box as a pvr quite often with no problems. if you are having problems programming it to record try Snapstream PVS. ive never gotten this to work, but i hear that it does the job pretty well.

Well I don't have anything right now since my guess is I won't be able to have the computer change the channels. . . but I'm planning to get a radeon aiw if there is a way for the aiw to change channels rather than having to change through the satelite reciever. That is how I have to do it currently with the vcr. . . BIG PAIN in the bum.

i dont think there is any way to do it then. the radeon can only control its own tuner, not a sat reciever.

Yeah thats what I was thinking, but I'm trying to figure out how then directv is able to offer tivo. . . just not sure if its then some custom tivo that has the satelite reciever in it too or what.

directv offers a dvr version of thier reciever as well as ultimate tv. both are all in one units.

i dont know if this will work, but if you can program your reciever to automatically watch a show and then set the aiw to record at the same time. the downside is that everytime you want to record something you have to program 2 things and both clocks should be synchronized
