What is a good TV for $2000.
$2000. What TV and why.
I want to buy one for Mom and Dad this Christmas. I saw a 46 projection HD sony for like $17xx shipped with a nice matching stand. Nice deal cuz the pricedrop, free shipping and no tax. It went back up a couple of hundred and now I'm not sure what and where to get a deal on a TV. They watch some DVD's, but don't need one of those 16 x 9 or whatevers. You guys know whats good so please give your opinions in plain english or your best engrish. TIA -jel ![]()

What size?
The 51" Hitachi 51SWX20B is $2200 or so, and is excellent. Below this price, I'd consider the $1800 51" 51UWX20B, or maybe a 56" Panasonic PT56WX42. With the money left over, get an ISF calibration. ![]() |

Those are HD ready. I'm personally not too fond of sets with built in HD tuners. It's much the same principle with onboard video chips VS AGP slot. |

My friend has the 5x Hitachi. I think he paid around $3000 for it though. Gotta compare model numbers but It sounds the same. Basically best TV in the price range. Where can I find that Hitachi for $2200? Are there any deals for those online. Tax is big in So Cal.

The parents are trippin right now. A long time ago we had a Toshiba and it was ok but when it got old.............
So Mom hates em. I tried to go that nice hitachi route and got vetoed there too. It's like if you had a 79 civic and still think thats all hondas are good for. So were going to wait till after Christmas unless it's just a spectacular deal. Really close to just ordering that Toshiba/DVD player at onecall. I should just order what I think is right for them, I mean it is my gift to them. -jel ![]() |

Ugh, hmm. I guess that leaves you with few choices. Avoid Sony like the plague.
The Panny 53 or 56" models might be a good choice. There's the 60" Philips 60PP9352 that's actually pretty good. Never of those have the quality stretch modes as the Hitachi or Toshiba though. The 53" Pioneer SD-533HD5 is a pretty good choice as well. |

As far as the Toshiba DVD combo, I have a prior model of that TV. It's the 40H81 which i've been using for 2 years. It's been a great TV and I haven't had any problems with it. Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents so you'd have a "review".

They make OK tube based TV's, almost as good as the nearly equivalent cost Toshiba and Panasonic (though Sony still is a tad more expensive). Their CRT based RPTV's suck in comparison to other makers, except for maybe RCA, APEX, and a few others (does Fisher Price make TV's?). Their LCD based TV lags behind the DLP equivalents. Their digital projectors are not as good as the competition, except for the VPL-HS10. Their G90 CRT projector is the best on the market, except they decided to stop producing them. |

In my random obsession of the week, I was looking at TVs that can do progressive scan. It seems like the only ones who have this ability are HDTV AND it seems like the only HDTVs are either projection or plasma/LCD.
Are there any progessive scan tvs that are not either of the two? Are there any HDTVs that are not projection based? Are there any HDTVs under $2000? Are there any progessive scan TVs that are cheap? Sorry for the number of questions...feel free to wack my around a bit, but only after answering ![]() |

HDTV capable displays come in plasma, LCD, LCOS, DLP, and CRT. Yes, see above. Yes, though projection based tend to give you the highest resolution, though there are exceptions. Yes, easily under $2k. Cheap? What's cheap? Any progressive device capable of 1280x720p or higher can theoretically be considered HDTV capable. So a 17" monitor will... |
