I Took The Plunge...Projection TV
After much shopping around, I wound up going with the Mitsubishi WS-55511. It's a 2003 model and has a built-in HDTV receiver. Woo hoo...It gets delivered next Monday. Now all we have to do is clear out room for it

I assumed that you really researched this purchase. Is this TV the best bang for the buck? How does the quality compared to a low end plasma TV?

good choice, Mitsu tv's are really nice. I've had mine for 2 years now, and never a problem.

I felt that it was the best bang for the buck. My choices were narrowed down to the Mits and the Hitachi 57SWX20B. I purchased it at PC Richard & Sons (NY area electronics/appliance store) and had the salesperson wheel them together so I could see them side by side. While I understand you're not seeing things under the best circumstances there, I really liked the Mitsubishi. You couldn't beat the price with a stick ($2,296 + tax). I had The Wiz down to $2,400 and used that as leverage in PCR. BestBuy was selling it for $3000, as was Sears (BB offered 10% off while the guy at Sears was a boob. He refused to budge...so much for the Sear PM). The cheapest I saw it online was for $2,670 and that was Crazy Eddie (I wouldn't buy batteries there).
While I got a great price, they were asking quite a bit for the extended warranty ($519 for four additional years). While AmEx extends the manufacturer's warranty an extra year, I'm going to shop for some extra protection. Any thoughts??? Last edited by faither : 01-12-2003 at 07:46 PM. |

Wow... It's a really nice price on the Mitsu. I recently bought a 57" HDTV as well, and like you I also considered the Hitachi SWX model. It seems like everyone over at avsforum.com loves the Hitachi, but IMO, it's overrated and couldn't find a shop that would give me the price break I wanted. I ended up getting a Tosh instead and am happy with it. Ironically, I got mine from Sears and they had no problem giving me 110% of the price difference ($600 + 10%) and 1 year free financing. Why pay cash when you can make it work for you for a year at no cost to you. On the topic of extended warranty, I didn't purchase the extended warranty plan offered by Sears. In fact, I never purchase extended warranty on any electronics purchase. You can do your own research, but most extended warranty plans are rip-offs (i.e. sales commission on them are the highest). If you really want insurance, you can purchase a 3rd party warranty when your 2 year warranty is about to expire. |
