RCA Surround sound system hookup help!

Okay I have an RCA 2500 surround sound system, Sony N700 DVD player, JVC AV-27F703 TV, which has about all the inputs you could want. They all have horrible owner's manuals though.

So here is my setup. I ran an Optical cable from the Surround sound receiver to the DVD player. Is there a need for anything besides this cable? According to the instructions from RCA, there is not. I can't get any video or audio to the TV. It all works fine when using the RCA cables for L&R Audio and Video. But as I understand it, you need the optical cable for full Dolby Digital effects.

I was running an S-video cable then from the receiver to the TV. The TV does not have optical inputs. Still nothing, so I switched back to RCA cables. I tried many different combinations, at one point I had audio and no video.

Can anyone help! PLEASE!

The optical is only for sound, it doesn't do video that way. You still need to hook the video to either the reciever or directly to the TV to get a picture.

ok, so, I'm assuming you have your receiver and speakers all hooked up, so that you can get things like radio or cd-player out of the speakers without worrying about the video... right?

if not, test that first. Make sure that you can get audio out of your speakers.

Next... hooking up your dvd player hook up the s-video to the dvd input of the receiver, and then, the s-vid out of the receiver to your tv.

forget about the sound for now.....
play your dvd, and figure out which input you have to select on your receiver and tv to get your video feed.

hook up your optical cable from the dvd player to your receiver. make sure you plug it into the dvd optical input. make sure you select the source on your receiver to be digital, NOT analog.

hope that helps.

Yes. Radio works fine. It all works fine with RCA cables, but no digital.

That sounds like my problem. I was doing just optical cable as the manual basically says that all you need is the optical. I'll try the Optical & S-video combination.

The other problem might have been the digital vs. analog source on the receiver. It didn't seem to want to let me change that, and it attempts to auto-detect it.

I'll report back once I get a chance to give that a shot.

Thanks for your help guys!
