Question Need DVD Player Suggestion!

I need a DVD player, which could play DVD-R, VCD/SVCD, MP3, and has digital optical output (under $200).

I can highly recommend the JVC XVS502SL. It's available at 6th Ave for $117.77 (add to cart to see the price) and shipping is about $10.

I have this unit, and it can do everything you want and it does them well. I have played CD-R/W, DVD-R/RW, VCD & SVCD (with PBC), MP3, and even JPG files. It has progressive scan, digital optical and coax output, DTS, AC3, Component video, S-Video, etc.

You can even see the realtime bitrate if you want. This player is fantastic.

I bought the Panasonic (RV-32K???) and it has optical digital output but it doesn't play copied SVCD. It also has stopping problem in the middle (once @ chapter 5 and once @ chaper 7) while playing original DVD (Toy Story 2). I then use my old Apex (AD-600) and the same DVD plays fine. I'm able to set up the Apex with composite digital out so I have 5.1 digital sound now but it doesn't play DVD-R. I'm going back to Best Buy and search for a better DVD player.

Best Buy carries the JVC XVS500BK, which is pretty much the same thing as the one I mentioned, except that it is black instead of silver.

Finding a decent DVD player that plays SVCD can be tricky. It seems like most of the models B&M stores carry don't support it. When I was looking for this feature a while back, the JVCs were the only ones I could find that were name brands that weren't ridiculously priced. Strangely, most of the cheaper recorders like Apex, Sampo, etc. can play them.

I have heard of a lot of different formats, but I have never heard of SVCD. What is it?

There's a great definition over here.

Here's some of the text:

SVCD stands for "Super VideoCD". A SVCD is very similiar to a VCD, it has the capacity to hold about 35-60 minutes on 74/80 min CDs of very good quality full-motion video along with up to 2 stereo audio tracks and also 4 selectable subtitles. A SVCD can be played on many standalone DVD Players and of course on all computers with a DVD-ROM or CD-ROM drive with the help of a software based decoder / player. It is also possible to use menus and chapters, similiar to DVDs, on a SVCD and also simple photo album/slide shows with background audio. The quality of a SVCD is much better than a VCD, especially much more sharpen picture than a VCD because of the higher resolution. But the quality depends how many minutes you choose to store on a CD, less minutes/CD generally means higher quality.

Got my XV-S502SL today and I'm pretty impressed with it. It played my DVD-Rs (on cheap Khypermedia 1X disc) and SVCDs fine. I'm going to burn more movies later so I now need to order the DVD-Rs. Thanks sequiro for suggesting the DVD player.
