PDA as a remote

These little programs are pretty cool. I'm surprised at how well it works. The range is not too bad either (about 15' or so, depending on the device).

for any palm os users, there is OmniRemote and PalmRemote. ive used omniremote on my sony clie s300 from over 10 feet away. most palm handhelds have rather weak ir ports except most of the newer sony units which have been specifically designed for controlling AV equipment. the s300 is older and supposedly has a weaker beam but it works for me.

Does anyone know the range of the AXIM? I am getting ready to pull the trigger on the Philips Pronto Pro 6000 but if the AXIM could do it I'd probably go that route.

I tried a similar program on my iPaq and had to stand right by the tv to use. Absolutely sucked, but worked.

Hmm.. this program says up to 50 feet. It mentions the Jordana, Axim, and even the iPaq.

"Add-in card fits in CF slot to increase range significantly for most devices, in some cases up to 50 or more feet" - $30 for the extender.

I had a Visor Edge and the IR port was built on the left side making it inconvenient to point it.

I tried one on my Axim and the range was terrible, I had to be at least 6 feet from the TV to get it to work. If someone finds one that works well, let me know.

Hey Apex

Any word on the IR sender? I see I can get an X5 for 229. Hard to pass up at that price but if the sender hasn't been upgraded I will wait.

Axim Info

Ripped from Aximsite.com:

Looks like they are supposed to have a fix out for the Axim this month. I guess we'll see.

Excuse my ignorance, but does a "flash ROM" update mean it is something downloadable, or is this a h/w solution.

I'd like to try this w/my axim, but am holding off until it works for more than 6 feet.

If you got a Sony Clie, don't even bother. Their IR is so weak, you have to hold it within 3' to work.

I have tried omniremote on the Samsung i330 PalmOS pda phone with horrible results. The program is nice, but the IR strength is worthless. I have to be within 3-4 feet of the device AND pointing directly at it for it to work. Supposedly it's a security feature so that people 20ft away from you will not be able to connect to you for some unknown reason...

I actually saw a prog like this for the Palm a while back that even came with an IR booster that ran on batteries.

Actually, I also remember seeing an article about using your palm to turn on/off car alarms in England.

Last, Does anyone remember the Casio watches that had remote controls built into them that would supposedly work on most tv's etc...?

The new X3 and X3i's come with full strength IR's and have been reported to work at about 20-25 feet.

that depends on the model. my s300 worked from over 10 feet and some clies are specifically designed to be used as a remote and have 2 ir diodes, one regular powered and one high powered to be used as a remote control.

chances are that if you get a clie, you will get one with a good ir. do some reading on pda sites to make sure. this applies to all makes as usually signal strength varies from model to model.
