ED TV is the perfect resolution for DVDs and it will also give you a better picture with standard (cable, sattelite, broadcast) signals than an HD set will. HD signals will not quite be as good as a true HD set, but at normal viewing distances you probably won't notice. I don't think the Dell Panasonic includes any tuner or speakers or wall-mount or tabletop stand, but you will save a couple grand when compared with the retail version that includes all that except wall mount. Another neat thing about the Dell one is that you can set your picture preferences (color, tint, etc) for each input seprately. You may need some connector adaptors for some inputs, but you can get them at Radio Shack for a couple of bucks.

I'm very close to getting this.
I believe this is the best deal for the money out there right now. Panasonic makes a better product than Sampo/Gateway or Planar, that is for sure.
I can't tell if it has a tuner though. Has anyone bought this? And..what about their warrenty? |

I bought one, but it hasn't gotten here yet.
It doesn't have a tuner. Use your VCR. All of the info is here: http://www.panasonic.com/PBDS/subcat...-42pwd6uy.html |

You probably did see a 42" philips labeled as a HDTV. They lied. It's very common for them to do this. |

I'm guessing it was a panel like this:
Philips 42FD9954 That's their top of the line 42" plasma. It's an ALiS unit, which means it's a 1024x1024 native resolution INTERLACED display. Yeah, interlaced... like those ancient monitors back in the late 80's. The progressive equivalent would be 1024x512. HDTV calls for a minimum of 720p, the next lower step is EDTV (480p). 1080i is the next step up above 720p. 720p is 1280x720 in a progressive format. What we have here is a disconnect. How does 1024x512 meet the minimum of 1280x720? Quite simply by lying and hoping the consumer doesn't understand specs. ![]() |

If resolution is 852x480 and DVD is 720x480, will it just stretch the picture form 720 to 852 or will there be black sides? Some type of scaling going on here? Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question.
I too missed out on this one, I should have bought this yesterday. Lee |

DVD's native resolution is 720x480, you are correct. However, there's 1 other thing that has to be taken into account. DVD's have a natively 16:9 format. What that means is the pixels are non-square.
So, when you display DVD's on a square pixel display, you have to multiply it out: 480 x 16 / 9 = 853 Thus, the 852x480 is perfect for this. |

question for apex, just wondering difference between the TH-42PA20U/P which is panasonic consumer and the one you bought, TH-42PWD6UY which is panasonic broadcast and professional video?
besides the speakers and tuner on the 42PA, is their any other difference in the screen? |

Very good summary.
One thing to note, if you're a tweaker, the TH-42PWD6UY does give you more options, and a better picture quality because of it. |

I was at BestBuy last night just casually gazing at the big selection of large screen TV's. The Philips 42" Plasma is down from $6200 last winter to $4999.
I looked at the specs and it does jive with Apex's numbers. But when I look at the other TV's, the picture is far superior to EDTV units. There is just no comparison to it's quality. Still too expensive, though. |
