surround placement ??
I am currently in the market for inwall surround speakers but I have a placement dilemma...I cannot mount the speakers on the side walls.
Would I get better results mounting in-ceiling speakers mounted to the sides of the listening position or in-wall bipole/dipoles that are mounted to the back wall? My seating area is against the back wall and I primary use the system for home theater. |

mount them in wall
behind your head. spaced evenly and reasonably far apart.
[speaker Left]----------------------[speaker Right] -----------------------couch----------------------- put speakers about 1 Foot above head level. if this is 6.1 the middle speaker should be directly behind middle of main seating area. and space other two surrounds farther apart by 2 feet or so.

Re: mount them in wall

Thats funny, after doing a lot of reading at Avs, dolby.com, etc... it seems the general concensus is to not use dipoles on the rear wall since the listener will not be sitting in the null zone. I'm starting to lean towards in-ceiling, since I'm still convinced that you will be able to localize with in-walls 1 Foot over your head. Last edited by vdaddy : 11-23-2003 at 06:35 PM. |

i didnt say use dipoles. And hearing is subjective. not objective.
Wall mounts are fine. spaced PERFECTLY there is no localization. as for ceiling, its much easier to localize and audible tone or "sound." |

What would you consider to be 'reasonably far apart' for inwall? I'm moving into a new house next month and would like to do the design work before the furniture is in place...oh yeah my back wall length is 14ft.
BTW, the only reason why I stated that direct radiators right behind me could be localized is because I currently have my surrounds to the sides (direct radiators) and the localization is overbearing. |

Well. parallel with the fronts. the rear MIDDLE surround should be parallel with the Center channel.
so space them accordingly. we want asymmetrical. |

Here is what the people at Dolby Labs recommend (lots of other good info as well): http://www.dolbylabs.com/ht/Guide.Ho...0110.html#s3.2
