i'm looking to buy a turntable (aka record player) to hook into my HT system (i'm not looking for a dj rig or anything like that). i'd like something that's got decent quality and sound, but nothing insanely expensive.
does anyone know what brands are generally good or at the very least what i should be looking for when i shop for one? TIA edit: oops! sorry GAM. i forgot that this relates to home theater equipment ![]() /me is slow today ![]() Last edited by whitak24 : 11-26-2003 at 08:44 PM. |

Second vote for Technics turntables.....good quality, although the ones I have experience with were not cheap.

Those two turntables are direct drive turntables that are primarily used for DJ'ing and scratching. For an end user using the tables for home theatre use, this is not the way to go. Also, the prices you quoted are extremely high. In all reality, those two turntables cost anywhere from $350-$450 depending on where you buy it from and when you buy it. For home theatre use, you could probably get away with a belt-driven turntable. Visit your local Mars Music, Guitar Center, Sam Ash or even some Best Buys to see if they have any turntables on display. Take a listen and see what you like best. You shouldn't have to spend more than $200 for a home theatre turntable. |

Yes, the two you pointed out are primarily for DJ'ing. As for the prices, they are MSRP from the Technics webpage. I was just giving the range of the Technics turntables. |

I remember, back in the day, going with my oldest brother to an Audiophile store and taking a look at a SOTA Sapphire turntable. The thing weighed 100lbs, the rotating portion itself weighing somewhere around 40lbs. That thing was $10,000 in '82, and needed a separate tonearm and cartridge. Yes, your $10,000 only bought you the mechanism to turn the record. |

Direct Drive rocks. Technics have always served me well, but they're pricey.
