Could Use Some Help/Suggestions Please: . . . TV For My Dad
OK, so my dad is finally in the market for a new TV. He has had the same 19" TV for about the past 15 years and has finally decided he's ready for an upgrade.
He is willing to spend about $1,000 (give or take a $100), which leaves a lot of options. However, the cabinet he has to stick this thing in is rather small . . width: 33" height: 30" depth: 20" Changing the cabinet is not an option, which limits options considerably. He watches a decent bit of TV - a lot of news and movies mostly. He also has a progressive scan DVD player and watches DVDs weekly. Knowing him, he'll want this TV to last another 15 years (at least), so I want to make sure he gets something that will not seem obsolete in the immediate future (HDTV standard coming in, etc). Here is one TV I found that sounds like it could work . . . Samsung TXN3098WHF: . ![]() Tube: 30" Aspect Ratio: 16:9 Resolution: 480p & 1080i Price: Buy.com currently has it for $1,016 + shipping More info can be found about it Here Anyway, questions . . . 1. Anyone have any experience with or knowledge of this TV? 2. How do you feel about Samsung . . . quality of picture, customer support, TV lifetime . . . ?? 3. Can anyone find a better price on this TV anywhere or know of any Buy.com coupons/discounts that would apply? (I think there's a $15 off $250 coupon somewhere, but I was hoping for something a little bigger) And of course, if this TV doesn't seem like a great option . . . 4. What suggestions do you have for a TV that meets the criteria? 5. Is there any more information I should share about needs/watching habits/criteria, etc that would help? Many thanks in advance . . .

OK, I have another TV option that I found . . .
Toshiba 30HF83 30" Seems to have pretty much the same specs as the Samsung, except the cabinet is even a little bit smaller and it will take 720p along with the 1080i. GoodGuys.com has the TV for about the same as the Samsung above (after tax/shipping). OPINIONS PLEASE? Samsung vs. Toshiba for TVs . . . personal experiences?? Bueller?? BUELLER?? Thanks in advance . . . |

if those two are the same price, I'd go with the Toshiba. it has a dvi input, and if your dad watches dvd's that often, a nice gift idea later on would be a dvd player with dvi output.

and this isn't a review of each specific model, but the brands themselves:
I own a toshiba 36af41 and a cheap 19 inch samsung. the toshiba is HEAVY. got it in...works well. picture is great, sound is surprisingly good if you don't have a receiver/speaker system. My buddy has the sony wega 36inch (not sure of model number, but the most basic 36" flat you could find).. he actually prefered my tv over his. the samsung 19" is great. it's in my bedroom, and it works great. i even dropped it from the tv cart, and gave it a nice crack in the plastic. It still works just as well. I like it. |
