speakers for receiver

i have a Sony STR-DE575 receiver and am looking for some new speakers for it. im currently using some freebie speakers that came bundled with the receiver. they some KLH ones, im not too sure of the number. are there any speakers that are good, yet not very costly? i know its either one or the other, but is there any middle ground for speakers?

btw...im totally clueless on what to look for in speakers and how to set them up in a room...so any help there would be appreciated

What price range have you established? Are you looking for floorstanding (sub or non-sub), bookshelf or wall-mount speakers?

As far as setting up your speakers, here is a good article from the people from Dolby Labs who are responsible for the Dolby Surround Sound. http://www.dolbylabs.com/ht/Guide.Ho...0110.html#s3.2
To get the best surround effects you want the left, right, and center speakers to be as identical as possible so that if say someone walks across the room the sound doesn't change as it moves from speaker to speaker. Rear speakers do not have to be the exact same as the front since they are used for more ambient rather than direct sound effects. You want the tweeters to be as close as possible to the same height as the listener's ears for the fronts. For lower budget (and space) considerations, you may want to look at a subwoofer/satellite system. The speakers are small so they don't have as much bass so the sub helps to provide the lower frenquencies. Location of the sub in the room is less critical than the other speakers since it is harder to tell where the lower frequencies are coming from. The closer it is to a room edge (wall or corner) the more bass you will hear. Listen whenever possible before buying- different people like different things when it comes to speakers. Since you are upgrading speakers, you may be listening to these for a while so make sure you like what you hear. I used my first decent speakers for about 10 years so get the best you can afford. You will probably upgrade your other components before you do the speakers again.
