Receiver Wiring Problem

One of my channels on my receiver is not working., so I am attempting to run the cassette player and my CD player to the same channel. I am using a piggyback plug "Y" from the components to the receiver.

I figured that all I would have to do is turn one of the players on and the receiver would work correctly. Well, the CD player works OK, but the cassette player will not send the signal to the receiver unless I disconnect the plug to the CD.

Do I need a switch or other component for everything to work correctly?
