Is HDTV harmful to regular tv's?
Okay, so I heard from a friend who heard from his uncle that said HDTV will be harmful to your television if your television is not HDTV-ready (as we approach the full conversion of digital tv in the next 4 years).
Why? Because the uncle says that HDTV only runs in widescreen (16:9) and that the black bars on the top and bottom of a conventional non-widescreen, non-hdtv ready television will have its tubes burned out 150% faster. Thoughts?

I think theres a difference.
When you watch a dvd in widescreen or a tv program that was recorded in widescreen, the tube still scans the entire screen, it just doesn't illuminate the top and bottom. But I know some TV's have a special mode that causes the tube to only scan the middle portion of the tv. I don't know if any of this has an effect on tube life though.

But you do not watch DVD's all the time like you would TV. What is bad for the TV is having the black there, not moving at all for super long periods of time.

Wow, all this info was really helpful. Thanks, all!
So does this mean that, (hypothetically) if I have a non-HDTV like a 36" or whatever Sony Flatscreen tv (not WEGA), if and when the whole world converts to a digital signal, will it still format the screen to fit my current 36"? Or do I need to go out and buy another tv? |

Out of curiosity, I thought you can only get an HDTV signal with an HDTV tv, whether its through an set top box or a built in encoder.
Non HDTV tvs will not be able to receive the signal. |

most likely the non hdtv will use a set top box that will downconver the signal to 480i, and the non hd models will watch that instead
