Opinions on DVD-VHS combo?

OK, my VCR is dying, so I was thinking of replacing it with a DVD-VHS combo so I can take my other DVD player to a different room.

Anyone have one that they can give an opinion on? I was looking at the Philips DVD750VR for $122...

Yeah, that's a good point (and usually my take on things as well).

However, I recently upgraded to HDTV and have been looking for an excuse to pick up a progressive scan DVD player to replace the perfectly functional (but non progressive scan) one I have now. When the VCR started flaking out I thought that might be a good time...

I haven't used a VCR in about 3 years. I just don't have a need for one anymore. Thank god for ReplayTV.

OK, y'all have me convinced. I only need the VCR to play back the kid's videos anyway, so I don't need anything great. I'll just slide the progressive scan player in there somewhere...

Thanks for the feedback!

I was about to get a Panasonic combo but decided against it since I could get a low end HiFi VCR for $40. I'm using my computer to play DVDs anyway.

actually when i was shopping for dvd players it seemed like the combo and vcr are seemed to be not progressive in most cases. and i picked up a progressive toshiba for 69 bucks. and if you can get a vcr for about 60 bucks, 129 is about the price for the non progressive vcr combos

Progressive is not really useful unless you have an HDTV.

i'm going to get one to go in the bedroom, but only for looks. I recently got a sony vega to go up there, which is silver. both the dvd player and the vcr were black and sit on top (equipment it out in the open).

the dvd player died and the vcr is on it's last leg to i'm replacing both with a silver combo. again, totally for looks.

normally though, i agree with DF.

the one thing that ive seen with combo stuff is that when one part goes bad the whole thing starts to have problems. ive seen a lot of dvd/vcr combos where either the dvd or vcr dies and the other side doesnt work so well either. then the people who had them usually get separates.
