$80k burning a hole in your pocket? Get a Samsung 80" Plasma

Thin, rich and well-connected key maxims for young social climbers may well also be the defining quality of many of the flashy new high-tech consumer products that was going on display at the Consumer Electronics Show opening here on Thursday.

And perhaps no company has tried harder lately to make a name for itself by creating such products than Samsung Electronics. The South Korean company is pushing itself further forward by introducing the world's largest flat-panel televisions intended for the home: an expensive 80-inch plasma model and a boundary-breaking 57-inch liquid crystal display set.

When Samsung's new sets reach retailers in the second half of 2004, they will be beyond the financial reach of all but a handful of video enthusiasts. The price for the plasma TV is expected to be set at about $70,000, far above the $20,000 Samsung charges for its former champion, a 63-inch model. For the 57-inch LCD display, expect to pay close to $30,000

Sheesh.

Finally, I had been thinking of donating this $80,000 to charity because I had nothing to spend it on and then this post comes along

Now if you are truely filthy rich you could get two of those babys hooked up to your HTPC in a dual-monitor situation. Although with the resolution you probably get you would have to watch it from the neighbors house for a proper viewing distance.
