Is broadcast HDTV picture quality better than DVD pq?

Me and a very annoying coworker are arguing over this. He says that, yes, cable broadcast HDTV is hands down better than DVD pq, but I say it all depends.

Can any one answer this and provide numerical stats?

thanks,
-daUnit

hdtv has a max resolution of 1920x1080. this is usually interlaced but there might be some 1080p units out there. hdtv also uses 1280x720 which comes in both interlaced and progressive.

the max dvd resolution that i know of is 720x480p.

Broadcast HDTV is better than DVD, no question at all. The only exception I can think of is Fox, which is really EDTV (dvd resolution) instead of HDTV.

Sometimes you have to make a mistake to learn. I on the other hand am perfect. j/k

I had the same argument with my friends. They were so used to analog TV. Monday night football really shut them up.

I would think it would be based on bitrate and not just resolution. I don't know what kind of bandwidth hdtv has, but I would think that if its variable it would be possible for a high bitrate DVD to be better quality than a low bitrate hdtv stream.

HDTV typically uses between 4Mbit/sec and 9Mbit/sec. DVD is typically between 1Mbit/sec and 10Mbit/sec. This being said, even max bitrate 720x480 DVD's don't look as good as low end 1280x720 4Mbit/sec HDTV.
