hopefully y'all can help me decide
here's what i'm lookin at right now:
PANASONIC TH42PWD7UY 42-IN EDTV PLASMA DISPLAY http://www.drplasma.com/dr/cartid76-.../itemdesc.html SVA 42" EDTV 16:9 Plasma TV http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product...rPath=79*3314* Toshiba 46HM84 - 46 Inch Monitor DLP Projection TV- HDMI Input http://www.parkaveelectronics.com/pr...hm84&l=Froogle i'm also considering the Sony Grand Wega 42" LCD Projection i want a plasma, but don't want to spend $4000 for an HDTV one. I hate the idea of changing bulbs in a projection tv every year or two... I also love the idea of having the tv mounted to my wall. oh 32" Plasma is out of the question, too small. OK OK OK, hook a brutha up, let me know what i'll miss out on by not getting an HDTV and getting an ED plasma instead. or any other advice, tidbits you can dish out. THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

If you watch lots of DVD, EDTV is good so the Panasonic is the best choice. IF you watch lots of HD programming, I suggest the Toshiba DLP PTV. I personally hate Sony.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forum...php?forumid=40 is a good place for info. They are pretty big on the Panasonics. If you have an HDTV and an ED plasma right next to one another you may be able to tell some difference on HD material (of course that will also depend on how close you actually are to the screen), but at home both will look fantastic and DVDs will not need to be upscaled. In my opinion, the extra cost of going HDTV on a 42 inch plasma would not be worth it since they are several thousand dollars more. Try to get a look at them to see what you want. The 7UY is a commercial model and does not have the features of the consumer model (like a built in HD tuner) and is supposed to have less shielding as well as different connectors for inputs, but has the same picture. I think the consumer model is the 42-25UP or something like that. You won't be able to see the 7UY anywhere, but it is a bit cheaper than the consumer. Not sure if stand or wall mount is included- things to consider. I would love to have one of the consumer ones, but cannot quite afford it yet. List on that one is just under $3000. Make sure you get a warranty when you buy it- some places will not honor sales from online companies. I believe Apex has the previous commercial model, the 6UY in his bedroom.

Who says you need to change the bulbs on your projection tv every 1-2 years?

DLP projection TV's have 6000 to 8000 hour bulbs (if not abused, otherwise, will pop more quickly). How many years that translates out to depends on how much you use it.
I no longer have my 6UY, I have a 7. Awesome plasma. To be fair, that's a very good Toshiba DLP too though. You have to see what looks better to your eyes.

i was considering the consumer model of the 7UY however the more i think about it, i can't think of a time that the tuner would help me. i haven't used the tuner in my tv in about 4 years. also, i was concerned about the lack of speakers in case i ever move it to a bedroom or something...but i can alway grab a small theater-in-a-box setup in that scenario.
i'm gonna hold out til black friday to see if there are any ridiculous deals on decent plasmas and if not i'm ordering the 7UY...blah blah i think....who knows i could change my mind again. |

Can you hook any of those up to a computer and use it as a monitor?

I have the 52HM84 and HD content is absolutely stunning. DVD stuff is hit or miss but that is more of a source issue than anything else. Games look awesome.
Following Apex's advice I got my fiance to maintain to the rules of RPTV's, leave it on for at least 15 min, never attach it to a light switch outlet so the fan can't run after shutdown. I turned brightness down and made sure that the bulb was on the lower brightness setting (the brighter one turns the TV into a spotlight, no joke). BB has the 52 for $2789 right now, sign up for the rewards zone for $9.99 and get $90 in gift certificates plus 2 years free financing. LK |

There currently isn't a consumer 7UY. The consumer version will be the 30UP. The 25UP is the consumer version of the 6UY. We're talking different panels.
You can hook them up to a computer and use them as a monitor. Burn in is a factor if you abuse em though. |

I went plasma...
For our company we needed some eye catching material and easily changable graphics for our booth. So under suggestion we went with plasma! I did a bit of research about them at the time ( over year and a half now ). I decided to go with the Pioneer CMX433 because it allowed us to feed it 1024x768 from a vga cable and it would scale it to native 16:9 widescreen. I have to store it somewhere so what better place than in my living room to make sure it is safe, and this way I can make sure it works when it gets close to the next show. Right? Storage. It works great for everything I throw at it from DVD's to playing games direct off the computer, to the x-box (also hooked up progressive with widescreen support). One bad thing is burnin, only downside to a plasma so far other than the brightness will continually drop. When that happens the company can always replace it
. I haven't had any burnin as of yet, but I am trying to be quite careful especially playing games like GTA, I change from full to wide to 4:3 format every 15 mins of play because of the map circle. Enjoy whatever you get, but if you are watching anything that could be static I'd stay away from plasma.Pics: Plasma Pics edit: Don't let burn-in scare you, I was initially scared but I see at times when playing games you get some ghosting, even after having it off, just watching a movie inbetween 4 hours of a game usually clears it out. I don't want to make you steer clear of plasma because you are going to watch 30 mins of Discovery, but if you plan to have it used as normal NTSC or even HDTV monitor, I would educate everyone that uses it. I did with ours and I get quite livid if someone leaves it on and walks away.
