HDTV (DLP) Recommendation

Panasonic 50" DLP

Review

At $2300 (sale until Sunday), should I pull the trigger on this?

It's been comparable to the Toshiba's... basically, will there be a better deal on a 46"-50" DLP by the end of the year? I know the Toshiba and Samsung are popular, but this seems like it's on par spec-wise with them. What do you think?

That one's only $500 more... would it be worth it to go LCD over DLP? I've been reading that the only difference is that the DLP has a projection affect on colors.

EDIT: I didn't see that it was LCD projection... I thought it was a true LCD monitor

Still... recommendations?

The one i have and that one is only different in projection type. It's LCD projection vs. DLP projection. The quality difference isn't that much.

I think the DLP monitor is good. You should get it

Cool -- we're going to buy it tomorrow or Saturday, but I'll keep checking -- speak now or forever hold your peace if you think this DLP TV is not "the one" !

I would definitely recommend the Toshiba 52HM84 52" DLP. BB has it for ~2790 now and with the BB rewards you can get ~90 in certs for 9.99 cost. I have it and am watching Turkey football on it right now, 8 people at my house thinks its awesome.

The LCD tv's from Panny, Sorny doesn't have as good visual quality as the DLP sets.

That goes against many of the people around the net. DLP was suggested to me by a person that probably has forgotten more about HT stuff than I will ever know, I'd definitely trust him.

Many people around the net know jack squat. Think about this:

If you compare front projectors (for presentations, home theater), can you visabily tell the difference between a LCD one and a DLP one? Are all the best ones DLP, or is it mixed between LCD and DLP?

These RPTVs are using the same technology...DLP, LCD...in the same fashion that the front projectors are.

Depends, do they use the HD3 or HD2+. Are they a good manufacturer or crap? Is the source set up correctly or is it crap?

All of those things considered, DLP is a superior technology with better IQ as a whole. I'd go check out www.avsforums.com to get some general impressions.

I think the 10% was last week... it's $3000 now

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....5&type=product

Then subtract $90 (or $100 since it's more) and add $10 to join the rewards, so at least for this week it's going to be around $3100 with tax... hmm

We settled on a Sony 50" LCD RPTV. As much as I don't like Sony's essence in general, it had a great picture for the price. I don't like the idea of needing a fan to cool a bulb for the DLP, and the new bulbs from Sony are only $199. It's going to be $2700 at Best Buy soon (so they said). Thanks for the help everyone!

Sony uses a fan as well. All digital rear projection TV's use fans.

Toshiba 52HM84 for $2299.94 plus $119 shipping from Amazon

Toshiba 52HM84 for $2299.99 plus $114.10 shipping from JandR

Thanks for the links Apex

Now after reading about each technology I still think we're going to go with LCD projection. I personally wouldn't go for the Sony, but hey, I'm not the one spending the money, I'm just the advisor

I would consider those Toshiba's for a TV for myself when I get a job, because that $500 difference between DLP and LCD is enough to make me save some $$.

Each technology does have its strengths and weaknesses. In general, for HT use, DLP's will be superior for most people. The real world contrast is several times better for DLP's than LCD's. This also translates to far better shadow detail and black levels, very important characteristics to look for for home theater use. DLP's also have a higher fill ratio (85-88% compared to 40-60%), giving you a smoother picture.

On the flip side, you have no rainbows with the LCD set.

The Panny has an HDMI tuner built in if I'm not mistaken.

Couldnt agree more... and, with DLP, no dead pixels... ever. As for the rainbow issue, I see it and it does not bother me one bit. Some people cant stand it, some people cant see it. I see it and could truly care less. I dont see it that often either...

I'm just grateful to know that the 19 year old at Circuit City who was explaining the different techonologies to my dad and I was informed/geeked enough to know all of this -- he said that the real difference between the DLP and LCD projection TV's was the "rainbow" effect. It was actually clear to see when side by side, but the thing is, if you get DLP you won't have an LCD right next to it to compare it to... but ain't my money!

Hey man, guess what forum those are in? That's right, MLM. You don't see me posting referral links in these other forums. And aside from that, everyone picks on me... DeltaForce is the guy that owns 80% of the conga lines! WTF mate!
