You're going to need a seriously bright one, especially if you have any lights that will hit the screen area. What's your budget?

What kind of screen? Fixed? Manual pull down? Electric pull down?

Fixed will save you a good chunk of money.
This is the best screen for your situation: http://www.vutec.com/vutec/silverstar.pdf It's pretty costly though. The good thing is people tend to keep screens for longer than projectors, so long term they tend to be better investments. You thinking 4:3, 16:9, or 2.35:1? |

Are you talking bar in your house, or an actual bar establishment?

Poor choice for you. You need something WAY brighter for a bar.
I'd suggest something like a Canon Realis SX50: http://www.projectorcentral.com/Canon-Realis_SX50.htm Or perhaps some Mitsubishi DLP like the XD450u http://www.projectorcentral.com/mitsubishi_xd450u.htm |

Build your own man!
http://www.gotapex.com/forums/showthread.php?t=81408 (Build your own XGA projector for <$300) The one I built has 4,300 lumens. If you use a 3m 9800 projector it will have 6,000 lumens.

Building a 4300 lumen one is not easy. The LCD panel cuts down roughly 70-80% of the bulb's light output. You'd have to start with a 15,000 lumen overhead projector. After you calibrate for D65, it'll be even lower.
Also, the .6" to 1.25" LCD panels in projectors have very very fast response times, probably close to single digits in ms. This is why there's no motion smearing with them (and your rail accuracy percentages are around that of CRT's). |

I have noticed no motion smearing with the 16 ms response LCD I used... It is probably not noticible below a certain point.

I'm in the market for a projector as well...but not at the $10k level. I'm hoping for something decent around $3k or under.
