Need advice on a portable DVD player

I am looking for a portable dvd player that is reliable and has most, if not all, of the standard options. I would appreciate any good suggestions. If someone could point me to a good review site (not cnet) that would be great too.

Thanks in advance!!!

Can you give a few more details? Like are you wanting it for car use only?

We have used an Audivox 10" screen that is for car and other use. It is a little too big for use in anything smaller than a van or large SUV. Had a remote, top loading, had coax inputs and tv tuner for cable, car adapters, and external detachable speakers.

After research, I just picked up two Toshiba SD-P2600 8.9" Portable DVD Players. Got them for our girls and the ride to Florida after Christmas. They're supposed to fit well in the Targus DVD-401 travel cases (with straps for seatbacks).

Good question. I am looking for one for someone who is in the military, so I doubt it will be used in vehicles very much if at all. Size isn't really the biggest issue but if it was small and light that would be a bonus. The audiovox in your link is a little too pricey. I am looking to spend $250 - 400. Does this help?

Thanks for the suggestion, faither. Where did you get those toshibas?

I bought two Memorex PDV-0700 players for my kids last summer. I picked them up at Beast Buy for around $160 each (BB has them for $169 AR now) and I've had ZERO trouble with them. In the car, on the airplane...they play everything I've put in them including DVD+/-R backup copies. My only complaint is that the battery attachment design is not great.

The biggest thing that sold me was the extended warranty from BB--even the batteries are covered. If they don't hold a charge as long as they used to, the warranty covers it. I'm not usually a big fan of extended warranty but in the case of this and my laptop, I made an exception.

Picture quality is OK, nothing like some of the $300-$500 ones, but I wasn't going to spend that kind of money. Recommend you get a good case for it, I got cases that store the unit, yet can be hung on the back of a car seat for auto use. They are heavily padded and seem like they would provide good protection in the event of a drop.

Wouldn't an older used Laptop with a DVDROM work? Plus it would have a larger screen.

I picked mine up from 6th Ave. Electronics. They were $364 last week but have since gone up to $402.

You can check Pricegrabber for a better deal.

Good luck.

The problem with a used laptop is battery life. Perhaps a used laptop with a new battery would work.
