nss: my wife SAW the light!

we were at a local stereo/theater store and i was trying to sell my wife on this

Grand WEGA™ LCD Rear Projection HDTV

however, she didn't like how it looked different from different angles. i tried to explain that it looks great if you're sitting down and a little further away without a bright flourescent light above you, dlp vs lcd technology...etc. yeah.....i felt like i was trying to explain quantam physics to my 3yo.

so we're walking out of the store and she's like, what's this? i really like this!

it was a 42" plasma. a panny i think. she was really impressed. of course, they were playing nemo in HD so it doesn't get much brighter and more colorful than that. lol.

so....she thinks it would be nice to get one of those when we finish our basement in a month or so. my only concern is about the lines that could burned into it from watching espn, the nfl, and playing xbox. that prolly comprises 80% of our tv watching.

Congrats Cheapie! I have been reading a lot about plasmas (still can't afford one yet) and haven't read anything about someone actually experiencing burn-in although some talk about the POSSIBILITY of it, not reality, so relax and enjoy it!

in my mind, a 42" plasma seems so puny after seeing it compared with a 102" one. hahaha. le sigh.

Cheapie, we just got the Sony Grand WEGA 55" LCD Projection from Best Buy for $2800 including tax and delivery. It is GORGEOUS. You get good picture for about 120 degrees, then another 10 degrees on each side it starts to fade. That's enough for most rooms.

Just remember that plasmas have the burn-in problem if you watch TV shows in regular aspect (not stretched out, with the black bars on the sides). It's best to stretch out the picture no matter what you're watching/playing with a plasma.

ah, would this be the "most important catalog in the world" thing? dopey name, but otherwise cool. that's what a lot of our xmas gifts to each other are, though we are stuck in the "pigs and chickens" price range for a few more years...

that is reason enough not to drop 3 G's on a TV. it's a TV for crying out loud. that is more money than some families make in a year. i know you are aware of this. i'm not going to slam you with my thoughts because I respect you. do the right thing.

Huh, if a cow goes for a $1/lb that's one sad looking cow

i could give a farm for $2250

Two cows, two sheep, two goats, two pigs, four rabbits, 20 ducks, and enough chickens to lay about two dozen eggs a day ... that’s enough to fill a barnyard! With this gift, you’ll be addressing poverty at its root — and bringing smiles to the faces of moms and dads who will be able to feed their families and increase their incomes, thanks to you. The next best thing to seeing a child milk, hatch, raise, or shear one of these animals is to share the joy of this gift with someone close to your heart.

a cow is only $525.

Boost a malnourished family's protein and calcium intake by giving them their very own dairy cow. Capable of producing 200,000 glasses of milk in its lifetime, a cow is a goldmine of health for a poor family. You'll also help a family earn money at the local market by selling extra dairy products and offspring.

Just get it for your wife.

I would love to have either a 42" plasma (EDTV is okay), 42-46" DLP or LCD RPTV in my bedroom.

cheapie... I love you man. bringing in cows to the home theater forum...

but anyways, going back to the tv...is the only reason that you're getting a plasma because your wife likes it? do you NEED something that hangs on a wall? or can u do a table top type setup? there's always problems with rear projection tv's, but how about front projection? you can get a decent setup for about 1500 ish. and if you're re-doing your basement right now, it would be a great way to install all the wiring before the drywall is up. and finally, with lighting the way it usually is in basements, you should have no problems with that.

Maybe the employees and stockholders of Panasonic will spend the profit from your plasma tv on cows for African kids. Didja ever think of that?

Not that I have to justify our family spending almost $3000 on a TV, but we have saved about $4500 by NOT having cable TV over the past 11 years, and even more by not getting broadband till now. Montly fees rack up more than a $3000 TV over time, so think about that

But somewhere, sometime, someone along that line of consumerism will buy the cow!

Also, since most of us are in our 20's and 30's and early 40's, no one's had to put a kid through college (except obby)... that's a big dent in your wallet... now that my sister and I are through college and I'm starting to pay them back, money's a little looser.
