Stereo Receiver (2 Channel) Advice

I know my home theater equipment, but I haven't looked at stereo equipment in years. I'm helping my father in law look into getting a new pair of speakers and stereo receiver. He's only going to use it for CD's and XM radio so he just needs 2 good channels. Any recommendations on a good receiver? He wants a good setup, but not a crazy audiophile budget. Thanks for your thoughts!

You only want 2 channels for budgetary reasons, or you feel that they give cleaner amplification? Seems to me most off-the-shelf brands such as JVC, Pioneer, Sony, Kenwood, etc. only have 2-channel receivers down at the bottom (low) end of their product lines, so those would not be good choices.

I was shopping for receivers recently, and saw a few decent 2-channel units from Sherwood and Harman Kardon. Don't remember the models, but I'm sure they're listed in their web sites.

I personally like how the new ProLogic II and DTS Neo6 processors extrapolate 2-channel material into 5.1/6.1 channels. Makes music sound more "LIVE"-like.

Thanks for the response. I've looked at a lot of things now and the H/K, Sherwood and Onkyo stereo receivers are pretty good. I'm starting to look into separate components as well. It's all for my father-in-law and he already has a surround system in another room. He wants the 2 channel setup for a cleaner sound at high power. It's been interesting looking into it. Since very few people buy stereo equipment any more, the items that are out there are pretty high end (which is what he wants).
