Roku SoundBridge M1000 Review
Here's a copy of my review of the Roku SoundBridge M1000. It's not a very technical review but I was able to get it to work without any problems with the latest SlimServer and the pulling of RSS newsfeeds and Caller ID plugins do work on the Roku.

nice review. One thing I want to corrent you on is the fact that SlimDevice's Squeezebox IS compatible with iTunes out of the box. Like the Roku, it cannot play protected itunes music but all you do is burn them to CD and then rip them back unprotected. There is nothing you have to do to have iTunes act as your primary "jukebox".
I chose Squeezebox because it can support multiple squeezeboxes and sync them all together or have them play different music. It is sweet to sync music in different parts of the house or outside (Roku can't do this). Also, Squeezebox supports RSS feeds, supports a ton of free radio streams and has possibly the best customer support I have ever seen. I use my PDA to control the Sqeezebox from anywhere in my house. Also, Squeezebox runs on Mac, PC, linus and such. The downside of Squeezebox? I would have to say that I want to buy another couple of them and they don't give a discount for multiple purchases. Also, the company is only through word of mouth, no availability at your local Best Buy or Long's Drugs. Before buying a Roku, you have to check this product out. http://www.slimdevices.com Last edited by Guy_Gadois : 12-30-2004 at 08:10 AM. |

So you're saying if SlimServer wasn't running, it could connect directly to iTunes? I was under the assumption (from AVSForum) that SlimServer must be running for the SqueezeBox to connect to iTunes or any other music library. The SlimServer acts as a proxy to the iTunes library. The Roku on the other hand can connect directly to iTunes without the use of SlimServer. I've also synced two Roku SoundBridges without problem using the SlimServer software. You can read that this is possible here and posts by eperedo on that thread. Last edited by DanielNTX : 12-30-2004 at 01:04 PM. |
