Is this a decent speaker setup?

My basement is wired for 6.1. I'm not going to drop a super huge amount of money in my entertainment center. Mebbe $3500 for the tv, speakers, and receiver.

Still debating on the tv.

But I like these speakers.....

Polk R50 Floor Speakers: $89 X 2

http://shop4.outpost.com/product/367...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG

Polk R20 Surround Speakers: $85

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WDVW

POLK CSi3 Center Channel Speakers: $175 X 2

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WDVW

Polk PSW505 Sub: $375

Approx cost for speakers: $1088 with shipping.

Is this a good setup? Decent speakers for the money?

I have Polk Speakers and I love them. Seems like very good prices on them, only a fair price on the subwoofer.

For about the same money as your original choice, this is the sub I got for with my Polk speakers (LSI series -more than you want to spend). http://www.hsustore.com/stf2.html Much better than the Polk subs and more accurate with less distortion. It sounds better with music and does not have as much excessive rumbling on low frequency effects in movies. They have a smaller one for a lower price too. I have not heard that one. http://www.hsustore.com/stf1.html

They are an internet company so you will probably not find them in stores. When I was looking for a sub, the names that kept coming up as the best were HSU and SVS and Velodyne. I went with HSU because it was a little less and am not dissappointed. It was much better than the 12" 100w sub I was using (Cambridge Soundworks).

i might just go with the polk RM7600 set and add a nice sub. is there a reason why i should get a set of towers for the front instead?

Just try to give it a listen to before you buy and see if you like it. If so, great! Go for it! If you use a sub then you do not really need towers to get full sound. My set-up is with bookshelfs and a sub- the sub provides the range below what the bookshelves create. This was also why I wanted a more accurate sub. Takes up less room than towers too. Front speakers should be about ear level so you may need stands or to wall mount them. Everybody likes different things in speakers so listen and go with what sounds good to you within your budget.

My local CC had a few Polk sets on display to listen to.

I'm sorry to say, but I don't like Polks at all. I went to the speaker room of Fry's electronics and tried several Polk setups, from bookshelves to towers. They all emphasized the mid frequency range way too much and had weak treble, making music sound very "muddy". Subwoofers seemed decent though.

I really like the Polk LSi series, with the Vifa radiating ring tweeter. There were many great deals to be had, but sadly not right now.

HSU and SVS are both great ideas for subwoofers.

ok. i went to circuit city to listen to the polks and BB to hear the klipsch. i liked them both both the klipsch speakers seemed to have a better high end. my hearing "palatte" isn't that discriminatory yet so i really don't exactly know what i'm looking for.

i've heard the klipsch seem a bit tinny to some people. would you guys concur? i have an ebay dealer getting a quote together for the RS-35 Rear Surround Spkrs, RB-35 Bookshelf Speakers, and RC-35 Center Channel Speakr. He suggested that instead of getting the RC-35 for the rear center i just use another RS-35. Does that make sense? It will save me a little bit of money. i am leaning towards going with the HSU sub zippy suggested.

i'm looking at either the HSU or SVS. the decision is whether or not i need a 12 or if 10 is sufficient.

here's a great review comparing the SVS PB1-ISD vs. Hsu STF-3, both 12" and $600.

hmmm....

I didn't like Klpisch, but some people do. You said you listened to them and you will be the one buying them, so go with what you liked. As far as the subs, you could not go wrong with either of those. If you want them to sound louder, put them in a corner.

How big is your basement? I picked up an infinity PS-10 10" sub for $150 at compusa. They are getting rid of them. 250 watts is more than enough for my small room. It sounds pretty good with my already bass heavy JBL's.

Btw, your only getting one center, correct? I saw x2...

i don't know how big the space is. i'll measure it.

i emailed HSU and got on the waiting list for a "B-Product" STF-3. that means it might have minor cosmetic damage. they said it might take 2-9 weeks to get one. so... i also bought a big-screen but i'm starting another thread on that.

i got the quote from the dealer for 3 RS-35s (one for the rear center), 2 RF-35, and 1 RC-35 for $1300 including shipping and insurance. that decent?

A B-stock HSU or SVS is definitely worth waiting for.

sweet. got the confirmation from HSU that i'm on the list. i'll let you know what happens.

i've been reading a lot about klipsch speakers. either people hate them or love them. a lot of people find them tinny and don't like the way they reproduce the mids.

additionally, they act very different depending on which receiver you have powering them. from what i can tell a denon or yahama receiver does the best job. now i gotta figure out if i like them, and if not, what's a decent alternative for $1000-1500.
