Question Optical audio cable: What's the going rate?

Hello. What's a decent price for optical cables to connect DVD players to receivers/decoders? Best Buy got some for $27 for 6 ft., and Good Guys wanted $79.99 according to a salesperson. GEEEZ!!!

Also, do I need to take into account any issues regarding cable quality/length? If optical signals travel at the speed of light, I'm guessing I can buy 299792458 meters and only get a 1-second delay.

You can go to Wal-Mart and find one for around $15 - $20.

I looked out on their website... and found these for the Playstation.. but they should work for a home stereo as well.

I heard that the ones made out of glass instead of the plastic fibers sound better, but I don't know. I picked up a glass fiber one for ~$25

Don't assume the light is traveling in a straight line, even if the wire is straight. Particularly with multimode fiber, dispersion diminishes the data rate somewhat, and attenuation limits the distance a signal can travel. Single mode fiber is ridiculously expensive.

Some rough numbers...
multimode fiber: 100 Mbps, 2 km.
single mode fiber: 100-2400 Mbps, 40 km.

As far as the person at Goodguys! it sounds like you ran into either someone working outside of their department (Cashier/Car Audio/Personal Electronics people) or alternatively, the salesperson was trying to upsale you the higher monster level.

A standard monster 1M will run you $39.99...the 2M will be $69.99. ILS100-1m and 2m respectively.

The person either jumped you up to the ILS200-2m or was trying some other crap (although frankly the ILS200-2m should be ~$99). Either way, as a matter of fact all those cables are sold for twice cost. If you go shop around, that is the MSRP that monster sets so you are unlikely to find it for lower in that brand. You do get what you pay for though....cheap optical cables using inferior materials do sound much worse than the higher quality cable...but you should be able to get a higher quality optical cable in that length for $40-45.

My prices seem to be a bit higher than they are listing now as its been a long time since I worked there...but sure enough that price corresponded to the ILS200-2m....the ILS100-2m was $45 and will suit you fine.
