Finally pulled the trigger on the Big-Screen. Opinions?

i bought this last night.

http://www.circuitcity.com/ccd/prod...il.do?oid=94680

i checked out the AVSforum and it got pretty good reviews. i would have upgrade to the 85 series but it would have cost me another $850 or so and i am already spending more than i planned on the whole setup. they didn't have it in stock so i'll get it when i get back from vegas next friday.

i was 2499, plus $400 for the maintenance/protection plan. i received $200 in gift cards plus about $85 more because of the BB points.

i also bought the LG upconverting DVD player at CC for $200. I'll look around and see if i can find it cheaper elsewhere. If it's more than $20 cheapier, i'll return it. very slim profile.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....7&type=product

picked up this component cable for my xbox as well

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1089890861880

between these purchases, the washer and dishwasher i bought at sears, and a screwup at best buy where he had to refund the purchase and recharge it, i had to speak with Citibank and tell them i was indeed me who was using the card. lol. i think that's a sign i'm spending too much money.

Congratst man.

You should have gotten it at Costco though because it's a very good return/exchange policy (lifetime I heard). Costco also has the Samsung HD up-convert DVD player for $99.

Nicely done! Yesterday I pulled the trigger on the 46 inch version. Bestbuy was selling it for $1700 plus the free stereo. They should be delivering it on Tuesday. I just hope I can fit it in my place.

I am still trying to decide on the maintenance/protection plan. Do you think it is necessary on TVs like this? How often do the bulbs go bad? And do they need to be professionally replaced?

i'm more worried about the color wheel and other internal items. i look at the avsforum threads on the newer RP tv's and they convinced me that since a lot of this is newer technology, i'm gonna want to pull a DF and make sure i'm insured.

Im not sure on how much the warranty is for the $1700 model, but in both Cheapie's and my situations, I feel it is more than worth it. I dropped $4000 on my TV when I got it... $600 for a warranty was a lot yes, but I have the piece of mind know that if anything happens within the next 5 years, bulbs included, I either get it fixed or get a new TV. It's just that simple.

For a $1700 item... is $400 worth it? I don't know...

Also, another selling point for me... DLP is newer technology. Who knows what may go wrong with it in the next few years.

samsung DLPs rock.
My parents were torn between the Samsung DLP and the LG PDP. My mom
eventually leaned toward the thinness of the PDP. Looks beautiful, even for
regular broadcast TV!!

as much as they say lifetime it's usually not true. Someone recently tried to return a 1985 TV.

Hey Cheapie... what size is it?

I hear ya but I had to do it. I live on the third floor. I drive a two seater convert Z# so it ain't fittin' in. My back is maybe not so good. And delivery was only $40.

I got to spend some time watching it last night and am very pleased. DVDs look just plain awsome. Me very happy.

When the weekend gets here cheapie, you'll be a very happy camper.

No, just a regular progressive scan one with component video outputs. To tell you the embarassing truth I don't even know what an upconverter is.

DVD's are not, common to popular belief, HD by nature. The DVD versions of films you see are compressed from their original HD format to fit on DVD-media. THis causes them to be "recorded" in 480i. Most standard DVD players are 480i. Quite a few are now Progressive Scan capable, which means it will draw each line in one pass instead of every other one. That gives you 480p for an output.

An upconverting player takes that 480i/p signal and converts it to 720i, 720p or 1080i. Higher numbers equals better resolution. Depending on the source material, sometimes 1080i will look better, sometimes 720p will. It's basically up to you and your TV.

Okay, so to put a movie onto a DVD it needs to get compressed. That I knew. And compression is a matter of discarding all the "unimportant" bits. But once it is gone how can a DVD player upconvert? I mean it sounds like the DVD player has to go through some formula to make something out of nothing. Is that right? And if so does it really make a big difference in the picture?

OMG!!!! x2!

Not only is it a great movie, it is un-fricken-belivable in HD. By far the best looking movie I have ever watched, and I've seen a ton on the new TV. It's funny... the Pixar ones are the best by far. Toy Story, Ants, Finding Nemo... and now The Incredibles.

I'm no Xbox expert, but doesnt it do 720p for most games? If so, enable that... =)
