Home Theater Receiver help and opinion wanted...

This is a long post - but there is a lot to this.

I have 2 home theater receivers right now, a Yamaha RX-V1400 on what has turned out to be a 2 channel system, and an H/K AVR-630 on my 5.1 home theater (5.1 due to room shape issues). I do need a phono input on something as I have a huge LP collection from years ago - the Yamaha has that. The 2 channel system has a pair of Mirage OM-9s (no need for a sub with them for music - very extended bass) and the HT setup has CSW Newton M-80s for mains, a P1000 for sub and Wharfedale diamond series for the center pair (8.2) and surrounds (8.3). Works out well. As you can see, the 2 channel mains are picky, the HT speakers aren't crap, but not ultra reavealing.

With the pursuit of my degree being extended a bit (long story - just how transfering colleges sometimes works), something has to go to keep the house and bills afloat. I've been selling on eBay, and that's going to h#!! in a handbasket. I am selling one of the two receivers regardless... maybe both, and that's here I can use an opinion.

I am selling at least the H/K for sure. I've followed them on eBay, and they do well. Not sure on the Yamaha - they don't seem to do well on eBay, but mine is minty and my feedback glows, so that might make a difference. I'll be happy with a basic used 2 channel decent receiver for the 2 channel system (and have myself covered there)... but what about the HT setup???

I am considering selling both receivers, and buying a refurb special Denon or Onkyo for the HT just to get by. My sources are just a SACD DVD player, DirecTV box and LD (which is analog only). Music use is just background music, like XM from DirecTV. I am leaning toward a Denon from past experience - I'd sure like a H/K if I could... don't like the entry Yamahas.

Am I thinking in the right direction?

Most recievers do not have a phono input anymore. I just bought a phono preamp to go with my reciever. NAD makes an excellent one (the PP2 which runs about $100). So you could keep one of your recievers and just pick up one of those (or something like it).

I'm covered on the phono section with the 2 channel receiver I am going to use. A turntable on both systems would be nice, but I don't need it.

I guess I am weighing the cost of a basic HT receiver ($200 for a refurb Denon) vs. what I can get for the Yamaha. I've made some concessions in the past, and both won some and lost on some.

Dont sell your Yamaha, you will regret it. Honestly, why would you want to get rid of a good receiver just to make do with a passable one for the time being? RXV1400 is not an entry Yamaha, in fact when it first came out it would have been in the $800 price point, with the RXV 2500 and RXz1 being above them at the time. (Obviously they now have a few different models..but not when you first got it)

While its no where near their top end, it is still a pretty good unit. From my days selling these things I have an RXV995 (next was RXV2095 and then the RXV1), which would correspond to the RXV2500 in the current line up (MSRP on it was $1000) There is no way I would ever get rid of this thing, although I am thinking its time to relegate it to the bedroom again and upgrading my whole system. (I would like component video switching, plus 7 channel sound)

I would also question if you are going to be able to get enough money to make the loss worth while. When you are dealing with electronics, older unsealed units will take a large loss. A new RXV1400 if you can find it would go for less than $400. Figure you would probably get only $200-300 for a used one. Hell, for that amount you wont get even a crappy used receiver. I could be off in my approximations, but generally I am pretty good.

That's my concern as well. The H/K seems to do well on eBay, and I bought it at a clearance on par with how the Yamaha is marked down now. Yes, I paid around $800 for it. Back when I sold my RX-V1300, people fought over the thing. But eBay has changed, and people don't seem to be spending money as they did just a year ago. That's exactly what I am weighing out. Money is oooooh so tight, but if I were to get $300 for this receiver and a replacement was $200... it's hardly worth it.
