Bose Wave radio OR 2-channel stereo with ceiling speakers for kitchen?
i have to get some music up in the kitchen for my wife and am debating several options. i want quality sound but have to adhere to my cheap personality. i have a $250 crutchfield GC that i can use and up to $600 in sharper image GCs i can get with all my Hilton Honors points. i am buying an video ipod as well from either of these places and that will be $300 from either place.
i have a cable already run from the stereo in the basement to the attic and would have to buy a 2-channel stereo and ceiling speakers to finish it. i also need to buy a volume control for the top of the stairwell. i already have the wire run there and a box put it. it will likely cost me $600ish to do. i worry about this option because we get terrible FM reception in the basement. both places have the wave radio for $500 and i could put that in the kitchen as well. it would be in a cabinet opened only when the music is needed. which way would you go?

![]() See if you can get a touch screen control panel too. That'd be sweet. |

other than the aesthetic issue which would sound better?
the other issue with ceiling speakers is that i don't know which axis of the room to align them with. |

What does your wife think- since it will probably be for her? Great fidelity is probably not an issue in a kitchen. I would look for something with small, unobtrusive speakers. Then they can be moved around later if you want.

Crutchfield has something like these (I don't know about the sound quality):
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-0IrbvvZ...00&I=065DSI255 I'd say get the ipod from the Sharper Image. In my experience, everything at the Sharper Image is WAY overpriced. Since they probably sell the iPod at the same price everyone else does, that'd be the better one to buy there. |

Buy the CSW 730 radio. Blows the Bose away BIG TIME (seriously, I am not just bashing Bose) and can be had for much less. In fact assuming you don't need the CD player, hifi.com sells the customer returns on eBay for $129 all day long. On the cheap, a CD player can be added. Since their return policy is very liberal, I wouldn't be hesitant.
If you do need the CD player, that model (CD 740) can be had for $349 as new stock. I had one in my kitchen - you'd swear it was a component system playing. It was that good! The only reason I let it go was that I finally moved the HT system to the living room, just around the corner. I have a Boston receper clock radio in the bedroom (another killer unit - $89 for a refurb from Audio Advidor). People fought over the 730 radio on eBay when I listed it. Don't waste your time with Sharper Image. Their stereos are pathetic. |

Okay, here's a plan. Buy the Bose Wave at Sharper Image - sell it on eBay as new-in-box, take the nearly $500 you still get for it and buy something good for less. Heck, buy and iPod AND a stereo. (and you think I am kidding) |

why wouldn't i just use the crutchfield GC to buy the stereo and ceiling speakers?
something like this http://www.crutchfield.com/S-7SPtX12...0&I=158STR197B and these http://www.crutchfield.com/S-7SPtX12...500&I=107RC60I Last edited by cheapie : 12-22-2005 at 07:45 AM. |

i chose the 2-channel receiver so that we can listen to the XM stations from directv in the kitchen.

I'll Bose-bash a little. I have a Bose setup I bought years ago when I worked part-time at Sears during one summer. It's nice, but since hearing other systems/speakers, and repairing one cube (simple paper cones with small magnets,) I've become a Bose-non-believer. As the audiophile forums say: No highs, no lows, must be Bose. I'll take that somewhat, but I find most Bose lacking in midrange. Still, for a kitchen system, I wouldn't mind having a waveradio. Kinda neat engineering. |
