Samsung Hi-Def Conversion DVD Player

How good is the Samsung Hi-Def conversion DVD player, DVD-HD755? Fry's have it for $69 and I'm tempting. TIA.

On a quick search I could not find any reviews- only that it lists for $120. Usually cheap DVD players aren't that great.

I was looking at the same one yeaterday. The salesperson said I wouldn't pick up much over the progressive scan DVD player I am currently using. It had HDMI including a cable which is nice but I didn't get to do much in the way of actual comparisons.

There really isn's a world of difference. I just had a Samsumg '841 go south (croak) and replaced it with a Yamaha that's just plain old progressive scan. There is a difference, but not that big of one.

Also the '841 that failed is just one more in a line of Samsung DVD players that have failed. While I have generally had excellent luck with Samsung products, their DVD players have been poor. I bought a service contract for this one, and as soon as it comes back from repair - it's going on eBay for anything I can get out of it.

Well, for the most part, the A/V world, even more so toward the high-end of the spectrum, thrives on barely perceivable differences? It's the eye-squinching, often subjective, improvement that justifies the four figure price differences.

Yup indeed. I used to be into high-end audio. Sure those $200 1 meter cables sounded cleaner and more coherent than the $20 cables, but dang!

I once visited an audio store where they had an incredible setup in one room. This system had a 6 digit price tag if you were to sum the parts. Sure it sounded good - very, very revealing and unforgiving, but what I found funny was the speaker wire. Never mind that it cost as much as a beater car, the amps (Krell) and speakers (Dunlavy) were on different walls... the wire was on little stands to keep it off the floor, and the distance between the chanels (wire mind you!) was kept EXACT all along the entire distance. Duh!

Ironically the best audio reproduction I ever heard was at a CEDIA show in a Meridian booth demo room. There was no speaker wire... the speakers were digital at the inputs! So much for analog superiority
