my friend's luck

a friend of mine went out to buy a 50" samsung dlp from best buy. it's like $1600 or something.

he goes home, opens the box, takes out the manual, and it says it's a 50" plasma. so my friend thinks, "no biggie. they probably put the wrong manual in. unpackages the whole thing to find a 50" plasma in the bag that retails for like $4k.

what would you do?

Was it like an open box special or something? I might bring it back because there's probably a guy who thought he was buying a 50" plasma and got the 50" DLP.

don't take it back, just call the store and tell them so they don't think the other guy is lying.

honestly though, I'd like to say I'd take it back. and i'm pretty sure i would, but it would be tempting.

They STILL might think the other guy is lying. It wouldn't be too hard to have on of your friends call in.

I'd call them and offer to return it. They'd have to sell it as used since I already opened it, so maybe they'd tell me to keep it.

If not, I'd return it to the store. Having a clean conscience is worth NOT keeping the TV. I like sleeping at night.

My conscience would be Good and clear with that TV in my living room under those circumstances.

He didn't steal it... nor did he set it up under dishonest pretenses.

It all depends on the circumstances of the purchase. If it were a new factory sealed box, then its a gift from Samsung. Although I would check that the SN matches the box information as switching boxes is an old trick for thieves at electronic stores. Frankly, you dont rebox open box televisions, so it had to be a new item. He just wins.

so when a cashier gives you change for a 20 when you gave her a ten, you keep it?

for me, that's a slightly different circumstance - I would give back the extra change because I know that the cashier would get in trouble at the end of the day for having the wrong amount in her till. If Samsung made the mistake of packaging the wrong TV... well, it's a lot harder to feel guilty for a corporation then a single individual.

Alternatively, if you call Samsung up and explain their error, they're likely to let you keep the TV - it'll cause more problems/money for them to have you ship the TV back, and ship out the right TV then it would be to let you keep the TV.

If it's a mistake of Best Buy... wow, they must be doing some screw-y stuff in the stock room!

so, it's keep it and keep your mouth shut.

call bestbuy and get them to come out and pick it up if they care.
call samsung and get them to come out and pick it up fi they care.

or take the time package it back up, drive back, and give it back to best buy.

i think calling samsung is the safest thing to do considering that they'll be the least likely to do anything about it.

I would be wary to do the last just cuz it's a pain and i wouldn't want to repackage, and load it up and drive it back.

Why would you assume she can't read or ad? Perhaps she is distracted by something? People make mistakes, you know?

The only real problem I see here is if the set breaks and you want to return it. Outside of that.....

And this seems really strange to me. I find it highly unlikely that the factory stuck the TV in the wrong box. If you told me they put 10,000 TV s in the wrong boxes I'd be more likely to believe that with assembly lines working the way they do. But a one off? I think there is some foul play here somewhere.

If the TV works fine keep it. Think of it as a pretty good deal for your $1,600.

It's a tough dilemna, on one hand we all know what the right thing to do is and it is easy to tell someone else to do it, but face with that situation, it would be quite hard to make the right choice...

mmmmmmm Plasma *drool*

yeh, if the box says it's a 50inch plasma on the outside, then they gave you the wrong box at bestbuy, and someone might get hung for it...but I doubt it.
I've worked in retail before and even big mistakes like that can easily be fixed...the retail places just pretend like it can't be fixed, because if they did it all the time they'd be screwed.

However, if there was nothing on the box, and a 50inch plasma sitting where your dlp should be...that's a little odd, and I'd call bestbuy and explain what happened

Good to hear about a consumer winning on this one. I've heard there have been all sorts of people burned by getting things like that but they get something worse.

In Hawaii a girl bought an iPod and brought it home and opened it and it was raw meat!!
