To blow or to suck?

Last week, I pulled the carpet from my living room. I wasn't thinking of my various electronics ( VCR, DVD player, amplifier, etc. ) when the dust began flying.

I am wondering whether I should vacuum the air vents in each device or use one of those compressed gas containers to blow out the dust. Or does it matter?

I'd vacuum it if you can because if you use a can of compressed air, you run into the one flaw of compressed air - it just blows the crap around and stirs it up in the air, making you sneeze and allowing it to collect elsewhere.

With a vacuum, you're taking the dust and placing it into a "disposal" canister where it won't really just 'relocate'.

Definitely go in first with the vacuum to get the light stuff, then the canned air to get the harder stuff, then the vacuum again.

if you can do it outside, blow it out. If you have to do it inside use a vaccuum

Those new 4 gallon shop vacs at Lowes are amazing - they have the smaller outlets and are very powerful. They have a backend blower that works well and you can buy those yellow 'high pass' bags that capture a LOT of the dust and crap. Best buy in my mind. We do a lot of this with power supplies at work. We saved a fortune over the old "canned air" solution.

I always vacuum. Reminds me I haven't taken the case off my computer and cleaned it in awhile.

I get obsessive and take all of my stuff to a different room or outside...use compressed air.
Go, vacuum main room again. Then bring the equip back in if its dust free.
