Need a PVR for my brother's birthday/graduation present

I need your help again. I want to get my brother a PVR for his birthday and graduation present from grad school. I have a Tivo and I was thinking to get him one, but I don't know where to get a good deal, nor do I know if I can afford the lifetime membership.

Plus I heard something a long time ago that Microsoft dropped their fees for the tv guide updates? Does that sound right?

What should I get him?

Won't Tivo kinda go obsolete once broadcasters end the analog broadcast in like 07/08
