Help! HD & non HD through the same cable?

OK, so I finally upgraded to Comcast digital cable this past weekend. However, when the dude came out to hook it up, he had a weird problem with my TV (Philips 32" HDTV CRT). When he ran the cable from the box to the TV, he could only get the HD channels. So when he was plugged in, all I could see were HD channels & every other channel was blank. When he swapped to the non-HD inputs, everything swapped, and I could only see the non-HD channels.

Now call me crazy, but I was hoping to be able to see HD and non-HD channels without reaching around the back of the TV & swapping inputs.

Now I don't know how long this guy has been installing cable, but he says this is the first time he's ever seen this happen.

Do I have a bad TV? Bad digital box? Do I just need a cable splitter? Anyone? Thanks!

What area do you live in? In the Ferndale/Royal Oak/Berkley area, where I live, they have a 2 cable system. Theres an analog cable and a digital cable. This could explain what you experienced.

I'm up in Lake Orion, and it's still a single cable (you meant the one running into the house, right?)

I would first try splitting the F-cable (from the wall) into both inputs.

Frankly, though, sounds like a bad cable box. The TV is fairly dumb-it just shows what it gets.
