Playing 6.1 Channels with 5.1 Speakers
What am I supposed to do if the source is 6.1 channels and I only have 5.1 speakers? Is there usually a setting on AV receivers for people like me that splits the rear center output to the left and right surrounds?

what receiver do you have? because it's usually only 5.1 or 7.1. you just use on rear center for 6.1 instead of 2.

I have the Onkyo TX-SR502, which is a 6.1 channel AV receiver. I only have 5.1 speakers hooked up. This usually poses no problem, because most of my sources are only 5.1. But I'm trying to play this one DVD which has a DTS 6.1 track. What do I do?

Why not just go and buy a rear center speaker?

Kinda defeats the purpose of buying a 6.1 receiver don't it?

"Quad" audio was going to be the "next thing" in the 1970's too. Never quite caught on. For most people, stereo was fine so quad was dropped. Now most have 5.1 and don't see the need to go to 6.1 or 7.1, but who knows? Anyhow, when you set up the reciever and connected speakers, did you have to tell the thing your set up? Which channels you are using? If so, it will probably just send the sound to the speakers you have- sharing the "center rear" speaker sound with the rear speakers- sending the same sounds to both in monophonic. If yoiu have a 6.1 movie that also has a 5.1 track, try it on both sound tracks- see if it sounds the same or if something is missing. I just have a 5.1 so I can't try it on mine.
