Using Home Theatre Speakers for Karaoke

I have two speakers which are in enclosures , two ceiling mounts and two rear speakers in enclosures for my home theatre. All are decent Polk brand.
The amp is also a fairly good Yamaha brand.

I have been using them for practicing songs through a slightly better than average microphone. I have noticed at higher volume settings that the speakers sound like they are straining( not feedback) when I hit certain high notes. I don't know if the term "straining" is correct or not, but I can't think of another term.

Will continuous use of my system in this manner affect the speakers?

Have you ever suspected that it might have something to do with... your singing?

Yeah, you might be overdriving the speakers in that frequency range at that volume, meaning you either need speakers with a broader sound spectrum or a more powerful amp. Or both. Volume isn't usually what blows speakers. Distortion does, though. So if you're hearing a lot of distortion, I'd back off the volume a notch or two.

All kidding aside, it really looks like you're serious about singing. I really enjoy karaoke myself. Maybe the next time you're in manhattan we can have a little G|A karaoke night. There are plenty of good karaokes in town, both the private room type ($25~$40/hr depending on the number of people you have) and the public "bar" type($2/song), which is much more fun.

Forget me paying to sing Karaoke. I have never heard of that. That really sucks!

I never heard of it, but I will see what it's all about.

BTW, There aren't any places in NYC where you can just sing for free?

There are. I've been to a couple sit-down-type bars that have a free stage where customers can sing. I'm usually there to drink/eat so I haven't been on the stage. I'm guessing that's the kind of place you've been going, right?

I don't go singing that regularly, but when I do go, my friends and I make it an occasion. We go to the specialized karaokes, get a room, and sing our hearts out for two hours straight. Your basically paying for the comfort and the better equipment. When I sing, it's more about trying to sing well, and the quality laserdiscs, amps and mics make it a much more satisfying experience. And don't get me wrong. I'm not saying it's not about the fun. Each visit is riddled with gut-busting laughter and excitement.

I have been singing for so long that I NEED an audience, and one that applauds....... and if they don't

Might be too "young" of a bar, but Encore in NYC has a karaoke - the entire bar's kind of built around it. Pretty good system too. I think it's on 26th & 6th.
