Anyone know where I can find the best deal for a DVD player for around $150-$200? It's going to be a gift for someone.

It doesn't need to have a built-in DTS encoder and 5.1 but with at least Component output, Coaxial/Optical Digital output, DTS/Dolby Digital compatible..

Also, to be able to play cdrs would be a plus. Thanks in advance for the recommendations!

If you want to play CDR's your choices are very limited. You would need to go with a pioneer, older sony (read first generation), or a mid level phillips. The problem that you are going to run into is that almost all of these players run over $200 even at cost. Your best bet would be to find someone who is trying to upgrade their player or has a refurb. The other option woulde be to go to a "open box" purchase at any retail store. If you find the right salesperson they might give it to you for cost or lower. For example, if its an older piece or there are a lot of open box pieces, stores will try to get rid of them below cost or at cost. I personally have sold older sonys for as low as $150. That model when current was a $500 piece and cost the company $320. The reason behind such blow out prices can be as follows: End of the fiscal year so it would carry over, need to make space for new products, or similar "benefits" to the bottom line. Once the companies are going to go below their cost, it becomes irrelevant to the salesman because the company eats the loss not the salesperson. This is my reason when I blow out pieces. Well good luck and happy hunting.

If you can find the old Apex DVD players, I believe those can read CDRs as well as play MP3's. Regional Coding can be deactivated as well as copy protection (copy your favorite DVDs to video tape..) They stopped making them this way, but I'm sure there are some around somewhere.. try fleabay.. (ebay)
