Will the early Athlon processor fit into the same socket as a Thunderbird? With the deals on memory for Athlon motherboards and the low cost of AMD processors, I am thinking of building an Athlon system, but I prefer the Thunderbird processor.

"Will the early Athlon processor fit into the same socket as a Thunderbird?" No it will not. The original Athlon used a slot one form factor. The vast majority of Thunderbird Athlons come in the socket A form factor. If I was building an Athlon system I would go for the Thunderbird Athlon. For the motherboard I would use Asus's A7V or ABit's KT-7.
