If you are still on AGP (which I think is safe to assume since you have a GeForce 4200Ti), then you are slowly running out of choices to upgrade since AGP is pretty much a done deal.

I'd recommend you run out and get your hands on one of the few remaining GeForce 6600GT AGP or higher card (maybe you can find a GeForce 7800GS ... which is the highest that nVidia goes on the AGP platform.) But since you said you MUST have 256MB.. then I guess the 7800GS is your only option (I don't think too many 256MB 6800 GTs and 6800 Ultras still exist)

ATI also has a few offerings, but for me personally, I just stick with nVidia.

Just want to let you know that the 7800gs is not the strongest AGP card on the market. XFX has a 7950GT AGP 8x 512MB GDDR card which is the best AGP card out. If you want to squeeze the last bit of everything out of your outdated system then this is the best for AGP. Given that its probably not that cheap compared to PCI-e of the same calibur.

Here's the link: http://www.xfxforce.com/web/product/...tionId=1006114

Thank me later. =P

Hmmmm... that must cost a mint.

According to Pricegrabber... the cheapest price for the XFX 7950GT is $247.02 at mWave.

GeForce 7800GS ... $134.99 + shipping at NewEgg.com

Is there enough performance difference between the two to justify the $100 difference in cost? Considering that AGP is DEAD and that there is no future upgrade from here on that platform? (thinking DirectX 10 if you ever upgrade to Vista?)

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I'd recommend the ATI x1950 Pro - faster than the 7900GS, blows away the 7800 and is in the same price range (about $150-200).

I don't really have any particular bias for or against nVidia or ATI, but the last 3 card in my AGP machine have been ATI (9500Pro, 9800Pro and now the x1950Pro), and I've never had a problem.
