Wtd: Places to look for out of print or rare books
Specifically, I'm looking for "Best Addresses", by James Goode (ISBNs: 0874744784 and/or 0874744768.) I've tried alibris, and half.com. I've realized that I'm pretty much limited to used books... are there any other places to comparison shop?

Well, I've lifted this pretty much intact from another board, but it will give you plenty of things to check out, anyway...
BOOKSTORES www.hamiltonbook.com (price: 10/10, selection 9/10, ease of use 6/10) I've bought books from Edward R. Hamilton for over six years, and it has become better with the web catalog (they used to have thick newspaper catalogs). The sub-categories are a bit confusing, but still better than the slow search engine. Some books are a dollar each. Most books are priced 3 to 5 bucks. Shipping is flat at $3.50 for mail order (web is much more expensive), so print out your selection and mail it with a check. www.bookcloseouts.com price: 8/10, selection 8/10, ease of use 7/10) This site has the most selection in fiction (check out their prize winners category), from Proust to Proulx. Searching is better than browsing since the latter brings up lists in the thousands. Has a real time inventory. Prices are higher than Hamilton, average 4-6 dollars. They also have some autographed books selling at regular price. If you’re interested in knowing who the best modern writers are, I recommend the Salon’s Guide to Contemporary Authors. Shipping is about eight bucks for twenty books. ($5 off $25 or more, use code ECENTIVES, password 5OFF25). Join the affiliate program and you get 20% back from every order, including your own. www.daedalus-books.com (price 8/10, selection 6/10, ease of use 7/10) They have some cheap books, from 3-6, imports mostly, but they’re the same as the domestic. Shipping is $4.95 flat. Selection is not great, but worth a look. www.half.com (price 8/10, selection 10/10, ease of use 5/10) The eBay of books. The only catch is, they’re used books and shipping costs two bucks a book. I bought from them many times, and only once did I get ripped off. If used books are your thing, this is the best choice. You might even get lucky and receive a new book. If you're a first time customer (or has a different email address), they usually have $5 off $10 not including shipping. www.allbooks4less.com (price: 7/10, selection 9/10, ease of use 6/10) I only bought from them once, they have some books that bookcloseouts don’t have. Shipping is $3.49 plus $0.99 per book. Wait until they have a promotion like buy 2 get 1 free. Right now they have $5 off $10 for new customers. Beware, I found that some of their books have yellowed pages and cosmetic damages, so buy them for yourself. www.1bookstreet.com (price 4/10, selection 6/10, ease of use 6/10) Not a great selection, and prices are between 5-7, but occasionally they have coupons that make buying a book or two look sweeter. Right now they have free shipping and a free book over $20. www.1000sofdiscountbooks.com (price 6/10, selection 7/10, ease of use 6/10) Never shopped from them before, but worth a look. Free shipping over $100, otherwise $3.25 and $1 for each additional book. www.halfpricebooks.com (price 6/10. selection 6/10, ease of use 7/10) Recently opened online store. Engine is slow. There's a list of books under $4. Browsing is better. Free shipping over $50. Use code 3B9ACA0B to get $10 off $30. www.ecampus.com The best place to buy any book at the lowest price. 50% off New York Times Bestsellers. Right now they have free shipping with $35 or more. Their discount book section is also worth checking out. You can also buy used books. Free shipping over $35. Use 10OFF for $10 off $100. www.alldirect.com Another general bookstore like amazon with a great selection, but cheaper—most books are 40% off, even paperbacks. Shipping is $2.80 plus $0.85 per book, or by weight. Company based in Tennessee. www.bookdepot.com (price 10/10, selection 10/10, ease of use 7/10). This has one of the best selections I’ve ever seen for a bargain bookstore (it’s actually the B2B site for bookcloseouts.com). One catch: to quote the company’s FAQ: “First, your order must exceed the $250.00 minimum to qualify for wholesale prices. Secondly, you must be a registered business or some type of non-profit organization (i.e. library, hospital, educational facility, etc.). If you represent a U.S. business we require you to provide us with your Federal Tax ID number.” They told me that individuals cannot buy from them even if they purchase over $250. Most books are between two and three bucks. Shipping is determined by weight. The postman might kill you though. Price Comparison Sites www.everybookstore.com: A great book comparison site including 35 stores, including bookcloseouts and allbooks4less. www.addall.com: Another very comprehensive comparison site including hamilton and bookcloseouts. www.bestbookbuys.com: Yet another great price comparison site. Also check out sites like www.slickdeals.net or www.edealfinder.com for the occasional coupon. Sign up to www.******.com because you can get a 7% rebate from www.bookcloseouts.com, 7% from www.1bookstreet.com, and 1% from www.half.com. |
