What is your price range? How heavy are you lookin for? Do you have any particular brand preferences? Does it have to be New, or is refurbished ok as well?

lighter (pref under 7lbs) and cheaper (pref under a grand) is much better. I would like one that will last for a while. While refurbed is ok, I would prefer new/open box. thanks again!

As posted on the deals page:

eCost - Open Box Toshiba Satellite 1800-S204 1Ghz Laptop with Lot`s of Goodies (Posted by: Apex)
This is the price for an open box unit, but you get a great laptop for the price. 1ghz processor, 256mb of SDRAM, 13.3" XGA TFT LCD with 16mb video RAM, 20GB HardDrive, DVD-Rom, 56k V.90 Modem, 10/100 NIC, WinXP Professional, and a Lithium Ion battery! It even comes with the full year warrantee. I`m sure they don`t have many though, so get yours before your neighbor does. ECOST

As for others, I'll search around =)

Unless anybody has any better suggestions, this is what I will probably go with:

Compaq 710US:
1Ghz AMD Duron Procesor
256 MB PC 133 SDRAM
20GB Hard Drive
DVD
14.1" Display

This model is 1249 at Best Buy with $100 Best Buy MIR and a Compaq $100 MIR (or Starter kit with free battery, mouse, etc., a $150 value, which is what I will go with).

However, Circuit City has it for $1199, so I will pricematch to knock the price down another $50.

Your last chance before I buy

just a note the graphics card is an ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON™-D graphics chip; 16 MB video DDR SDRAM; 3D acceleration support

I'd only buy from Sony's website if you wanted it custom. They sell their systems at retail price. Though, they do sometimes have like $100 off their systems I think. You might want to shop around maybe BestBuy or other places to see if they offer this same model. All I gotta say about that laptop is..HEAVY! but nice features =)

I've searched online and everywhere and the price for it is usually around $1599 after rebate. Ordering from the sony store would deduct the rebate automatically thus saving me from all the hassle of submitting rebates. If anyone knows where i can get this laptop for cheaper then $1599 please tell me or email me...

Have you tried local electronic stores, like Circuit City? My boyfriend got a Compaq (or Toshiba?) laptop with those specs for $1,000 and 0% financing for one year at Circuit City in last month. Check out the Sunday ads for what's on sale.

I might just go down to bestbuy or circuit city and buy one, but I really don't like to deal with rebates...the last 2 rebates i did, i never got any money back.....and so i'd rather just order from the sony shop and not deal with sending in stupid UPC labels and filling out forms with EXACTLY the way they want it...but have you decided on which laptop you're gonna get?

I was just about to start a forum on the exact topic!

I too have been looking at laptops and tons of computer review sites.
I have narrowed down my choices to:
Toshiba Satellite 3005-S307 Notebook (1.13-GHz Pentium III, 256 MB RAM, 30 GB hard drive)$1699
Toshiba Features:

1.13 GHz Intel Pentium III
256 MB SDRAM
30 GB IDE Hard Disk
24x (read), 4x (write), 4x (rewrite) CD-RW, 6x DVD-ROM,
Windows 2000 or Windows XP Home Edition
Lotus SmartSuite Millennium Edition, Intuit Quicken Basic 2001, Norton AntiVirus 2002, AOL (3 Month offer), Adobe Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Toshiba Custom Utilities, Satellite Series Online Documentation, Virtual Tech, Toshiba Great Software Offer -- Receive your choice of two software titles. The software selection includes titles from the follow categories; productivity, education/reference, creativity and entertainment
14.1 inch active-matrix display
5.7 pounds
See more technical details

Note: Gift-wrapping not available for this item.

Huh, Amazon showing out of stock. But they did have a great deal for free shipping + $200 gc.

ALso looking at the Compaq n400c. PC mall has it for $850-$900. That's 50% off anywhere else, but, it does not come w/ a meu unit meaning no drives. on the other hand, it is less than 4lbs. and top of the line ultraportable.

also looking at fujitsu lifebook s series. looks sweet!

anyone have any personal experience w/ these computers? I feel that got/apex consumers usually have more informative reviews than the joe schmoes on other web sites.

Thanks!

That sucks. Did you chase after the company for your rebate?

When my bf bought his laptop (as mentioned before), it also came with a $100 rebate. He got it in the mail a couple of days ago with no problems.
