ibook dealy needed
I'm looking to get an ibook but off of apple's site for an education discount I only get $50 off and still have to pay for tax and shipping. So I was wondering if anybody knows of a deal. . . OR I'm hoping that somebody out there works or knows somebody that works at an Apple store and can hook me up. . .

i'd go for the older model with the smaller monitor. that's what was so nice about the ibook--small size for portability. If you like the bigger screen you may as well get a low-model titanium powerbook.
why? 1. G4 instead of G3 2. possible superdrive upgrade. 3. looks cooler |

The smaller one is what I'm going for. . . not sure where you thought I was going for the bigger one, hehe. I'm looking for specifically the 600/128/20/combo drive model (12" one hehe). I really want a powerbook but. . . I don't feel like dumping in 3300+ for the model I want and end up hating the thing. . . so starting off with the ibook to make sure I can get used to it. And most importantly I like that its a little smaller and thats what I need right now. Anyhow, thanks for the linky. . . but seriously now, there's over 7000 members. . . someone has to be hooked up with an apple worker somewhere he he he.

go to http://connect.apple.com/
join the student ADC for $99 this gives you 1 hardware discount and monthly mailings including OS updates and developer tools. I have OS 9.0 9.01 9.2.1 (in like 8 languages) 10.0 10.0.3 10.1 10.1.2 All from this. It beats paying each time. Anyways, back to your deal. after joining go here: http://developer.apple.com/students/discount/ go almost to the page bottom to hardware discounts. follow links to store. Combo drive bas config: $1,275.00 12.1-inch TFT XGA display 600MHz PowerPC G3 System bus @ 100MHz 256K L2 cache @ 600MHz 128MB SDRAM memory 20GB Ultra ATA drive AirPort ready Up to 5 hr. battery life Only 4.9 pounds Education price for same system: $1,449.00 12.1-inch TFT XGA display 600MHz PowerPC G3 System bus @ 100MHz 256K L2 cache @ 600MHz 128MB SDRAM memory 20GB Ultra ATA drive AirPort ready Up to 5 hr. battery life Only 4.9 pounds So you save an additional 75 bucks, plus you get updates and stuff mailed to you. Its well worth it. You may now be able to afford a powerbook. The only reason i know this (many people have no clue about it) is because I am an apple employee. You must be a student for this. Email me at fivitch@hotmail.com if you need any more help.

Its worth a try. I think it will matter who handles it. If the person is observant and notice the price is for exclusive people, I doubt you'll get the pm. but if somebody who could care less handles it. . . you'll get yer check, hehe.
Anyhow, just as an update. I ended up picking up the model I wanted (600/128/20/combo) at circuit city for 1200 and the guy threw in their last airport card for free. It was the display model, but since the general public think apple comps suck. . . the thing is brand new. Hehe, anyhow its worth a try since Circuit City is clearing out all their apple stuff. Had to call all the stores in San Diego area to hunt one down. Also called the Inland Empire area since that is where my home is. |

I'm glad you got a great deal. I love my iBook. I have a 500/256/10GB with airport. Having the wireless built in is awesome. You dont need to mess with a damn antenea sticking out of the side of the system. Its very nice.
I myself am a PC convert. I hated apple systems just like everyone else. Then I sat down and seriously decided to try one out. With the power of a G4, OS X, and the sharpness of the LCD, I was impressed. All LCD's that I have seen on the market just didnt compare. OS X is awesome, stable as hell, and powerful. Great for development. Having a BSD backside is the best thing apple could have done for it. I have a AMD 1.2 GHz t-bird that just collects dust in my room. I would sell it immediately if i knew I could get enough cash to get the new iMac. But since a PC doesnt retain a resale value liek an apple system does, I am stuck with a system less than a year old that burns 4 times the energy, does half as much, and isnt worth dick. |

Not that I have anything deal-relevant to add to this, but I figured I'd mention that I've got some inane thought I can't shake out of my head to get an iBook. Don't need one, but for some reason I want one. Although not the newer ones...the older ones. I want one of the Purple or Lime Green ones.
The G3's. Sure they're weaker than the newer ones but I think they look cooler. They go for pretty cheap on eBay, although right now my biggest problem is that I have money and a couple things I really want bad so I'm trying to debate what to spend it on. ![]() BTW I think Macs are weak compared to PCs myself, if you look at cold hard clock speeds and performance. Considering the fact that my $700 self-built Athlon 1.4/512/40 outperforms the highest clock G4 available...I don't see any reason to think that Macs outperform PCs. At least not Athlons. Intels...yep. But then again, nowadays Pentium systems aren't jack anymore. <just my brief thought on the matter> |

BUY ONE, hehe. The performance issue is a little cloudy. But here is the more important factor. I'm a lot more PRODUCTIVE on my lil' ibook than I am on my new XP 1800+ system I just built. One reason is that so far I have been unable to crash or freeze up anything under OSX. Also, even though stuff runs slower than on a intel/amd system, the fact that I don't go through the hassles of errors or rebooting once in a while, it makes it a much more seamless experience. As much as I love my pc and building them, there's something about an apple box that I love. Just the fact that you can flip the swith and just expect a trouble-free experience warrants enough for me to use a mac.
