CD burner needed.
Ok... my GF wants to have a CD burner to back up her system. She has and IBM thinkpad T22. I'm thinking that the best option would be to get her a USB burner. 1)What do you guys think about that option and 2) are there good deals out there for USB burners?

Oh... one other thing. I'm assuming that her laptop has a USB port. I haven't seen her laptop yet, and she won't know what a USB port is. It is a safe assumption, right?

Ok... definitely going with the USB burner. Does anyone have any idea on which one's are good. I have a HP myself and that works fine, but there are better deals on other brands. However, I don't want to buy junk. Has anyone used any of these burners and which ones are good which ones are junk? Please help. Thanks.

I would definetly go with the qps 16x, or if you wanted something a little faster, go with the tdk for 180 at 24x. Since you are just backing up files, probably burn a few music cds, etc. a 24x is not really needed in your situation. Also i assume that you know there is a difference between usb 1.0, and 2.0. If your GF's labtop doesnt have usb 2.0, you will have to upgrade, which is pretty easy if you know what you are doing. If she doesnt have usb 2.0 and you know crap about installing computer parts, buy the burner, and/or usb 2.0 upgrade card from compusa. The usually have free installation with their computer parts.

I know a little bit about computers (enough to get myself into trouble), so I could probably figger out how upgrade it. The problem is that my GF doesn't know much about computers, and she's 1000 miles away, so I can't fiddle around with it for her. I'm just ordering the burner for her because I can do the research better and have more free time. =:-)
I was leaning towards the QPS myself because it's cheaper, but I just wanted to check to make sure that it isn't junk. Have you had previous experience with either burner, or brand? |

I have had experience with tdk internal burners, and i love them. They put a lot of quality into them, and great tech support. The QPS i have not had personally, but my cousin has, and he loves his external. I would assume that tdk would put the same amount of quality into their externals as their internals. As far as Iomega, all i can say is they should stick to zip drives, but their predator external is ok. CenDyne........i have heard a lot of bad things about their burners, but i havnt been able to verify if they are crapy yet. The usb (1.0 or 2.0) could be a real problem for your GF, if she doesnt upgrade. Alot of the burners can use 1.0 and 2.0, but if you have usb 1.0 it will burn at 4x, instead of 24x(or 16x). If thats cool with your GF, go for it and you dont need to upgrade, but you will be paying a lot of $$ for a fast burner that you can't use. Also, i want to know where the hell you are looking up these prices. Whereever it is, you are getting taken. I live in southern CA, im looking at last weeks compUSA ad.......QPS 24x10x40x usb 2.0 drive for $150 after $30 mail in rebate. Whereever you are, you should check out ur local compUSA or their website, if you can find they same deal. I would absolutely recommend the QPS for $150. Check it out....tell me what you find

Cool. Thanks for the info. I've been getting my prices from Amazon.com which I guess is a rip-off, but they had cheaper prices than Bestbuy and Circuit City. I looked on the compusa website, but it had it priced at $199.99 and I can't find a rebate for it (is it a B&M or a Cal. specific thing)? If the USB thing would only limit her burner to 4X, then I guess it's OK (as long as it still burns). I'll be able to visit her eventually to upgrade it if she can't.

I checked out compusa's website, no QPS for $150, must have been a southern ca thing, and the price was good until yesterday anways. Let me check out all the burners when i go to work tonight. Ill check to see which which ones you can use with usb 1.0, and ill ask my manager if we are going to have any deals soon.
Post results later........ |

You can use the QPS burners with 1.0, just like a said earlier at 4x. Here in SO CA, the tdk 24x is cheaper than the QPS, so i would go with that, but if the QPS is cheaper, go ahead with that one. Let me look around for a couple of deals...

I only thing i could find so far.....Tdk 24x at dell.com, use code:
7A83FE73C267 That will give you 10% off, but they are all sold out right now. By the time they get more in, there will probably be a better deal. Unfortunetly, stapls has no $30 off $150 purchase, or any place at that matter. If you want to buy it soon, go with the cheaper QPS from amazon. If you want to wait, get the tdk, or i can try to get a better deal. |
