Keep your eye on the Dell refurb site - it changes daily, so you have to be quick -

I've never found the dell refurbished site to be very good price wise. A lot of the time it seams you can buy a new one for about the same price or even less if you wait for the right deal... |

True... you have to watch closely. The last system I bought there cost 25% less than the same new one, but I have seen it where the prices are close to the same as new.
I have also seen them offer additional discounts of up to $400 off the REFURB cost, which ended up being about 40% less than the new system, so you have to check back every now & then to find the best deal. |

first off, how will the laptop be used?
Will it be used just in your dorm, or do you plan on taking it to class and around campus with you? If so, look at weight and batterylife before you rush into something.

the laptop is just going to be used mainly outside the dorm. like in the library, when i go home, etc. nothing highly extensive though, like imaging or hardcore gaming. i kinda want something that i can use anywhere for word processing, internet, and maybe watching movies.
