My specs...I need..Video Card...Sound Card
Alright everyone, I am building a system and I don't want the video card or the sound card to be the bottleneck of the machine. Here are the specs:
AMD Athlon XP 1900 ASUS A7V333 Motherboard 512 DDR PC2100 RAM Western Digital 80gig 7200rpm 8mb buffer Hard Drive What are your opinions for sound and video cards. I don't want to spend more than $55ish for the sound card and no more than $75ish for the video card. I presently have a NVIDIA GeFORCE 2 PRO. Plus, there are so many different manufacturers of cards...how do you know which is good? thanks, Super A

you wont find much that beats your present card for 75 bucks. I would stay with the geforce 2 and invest more in the sound card. Get an audigy, which would give you a firewire port

Which audigy sound card would you suggest? There is the audigy mp3/audigy gamer/audigy platinum. What are the major differences that I need to be aware of? Also, because I am buying online am I losing much if I purchase the OEM and not the retail package?
thanks, Super A |

Audigy 1394; the MP3 and Gamer are the same card, with diffferent software bundles. the platinum adds the break-out box that fits in a drive bay and has ports for the optical, AC3 digital, etc.
I've been very pleased with my Audigy 1394(OEM). You can download most of the software from Creative's site.

as far as OEM goes, check creative.com for the software included with the card. OEM will not come with this. Usually its a game or two and some freeware/shareware utilities. The rest can be dl'd from creative. Personally I wouldnt get the retail, because I wont use most of the software they bundle with it.
Creative bundles the same card with differnt software packages. The MP3 and xgamer have music and game software respectively. The platinum has a drive bay that will give you front access to things like audio in/out jacks, firewire, optical, and various other ports (and i think possibly infared for a remote). If you use them often, go for it, if not, save the money. |
