It depends on how much you want to spend on your first guitar.
I would generally say that anything under $500 is probably not very well constructed (unless you're buying it used and got some incredible deal). I personally would recommend a Taylor C614. I think those run for about a grand (depending on the wood you want to use). Speaking of wood, rosewood is pretty nice for the face of the guitar. Also, you want to think about the sound that you want. A nice and full sound would require and full-body guitar. A more portable, light, but a little more twangy sound would entail buying a thinbody guitar. Next, do you want a pick-up in your guitar (where you plug in your 1/4" cable into an amp, mixer, etc.) How about on-board electronics? This relates to being able to control your volume on the guitar as opposed to plugging your guitar into some sort of amp and controlling the volume there. Many people like to have outboard electronics so that there is minimal cutting into the wood. The most important thing is to try out the guitar before you buy it. Being more expensive doesn't mean sounding better. It's what you think suits you the best. Hope this helps and good luck!
