Wow - that's a big question.

Which one do you want - a camcorder or a still camera?
What's your budget?
What are you going to use it for (pro, amateur, webpages, publishing, family/vacation pics, etc)?

If you can answer those questions, it's easier to make a recommendation.

I'd suggest you give us more specifics on what you are going to need this item to do

Some digi cams will record video- some with sound, some without at varying time limits depending on the model. I was looking at a Sony DSC S85 that had its video limit determined by the capacity of the memory card. I decided I didn't need all that. The Nikon I got does 40 secs w/ no sound. Budget in a bigger media card- the ones that they come with don't usuallly hold very much. If you want one for casual shooting, you probably don't need much more than 3.2 mps since that will produce a decent 8x10. Most have a 3x zoom- don't worry about the digital zoom. You can do that when you print a picture plus it will make your picture less sharp. The auto features generally do an excellent job of calculating exposure for you.

I'd recommend that you start with a digital camera - I think you'll get more use out of it.

You can get a pretty nice one for the budget you have. I'd recommend an Olympus, Canon, or Nikon. A 4 megapixel is probably your best bet for your budget. Also, like zippyjuan mentioned, be sure to save a few bucks for a bigger storage card - 128 or 256MB will probably hold you for a while. You might also find it convenient to get a card reader - then you just plug your card right into the reader rather than hooking up your camera to your PC. It's faster & doesn't drain you camera's batteries.

Here are some places that might be able to help narrow your choices:

You can almost always find the best prices at http://www.buydig.com

Good luck!
